I think dayno meant aesthetically a solid chainring doesn't go well with the classic appearance of the bike. A normal SG75 ring would probably 'suit it more'.

  • It's hardly classic is it, look at the cranks and grips.

Overall I'd say it's a fairly classic looking bike, saddle, gumwall tyres, shallow rims, clips and straps, lugged steel frame, etc etc.

  • I can see where you are coming from but it looks like a pretty standard njs keirin bike. Nothing on that bike was chosen for a certain look.

Pretty sure it's not lugged either.

I am not saying the bike was built for a certain look.

Regarding the lugs, after looking properly neither can I. I just assumed it was lugged, fail on my behalf.

I was simply trying to provide an explanation to eddie as to why dayno suggested the changing of the chainring because it looked to me as though he got the wrong end of the stick.

  • Good first point, and after looking properly neither can I. I just assumed it was lugged, fail on my behalf.

Look again, it is lugged, so a double fail for changing you mind. Lugs are the same as on my Kiyo - I doubt you'll find a Kiyo made any other way to be honest.

  • I loves it. Not many people will, but that is fuckin cool like.

Okay, looking for the third time I can now see the lugs.

Fair enough, nice looking frame anyway.

    Even with the red bits?

  • +1 on perception max,

lugged it is, the builder was an apprentice to a few italian guys and uses italian style lugging, really subtle, not a good photo.....

araya titanium rims, laced on - sure they are sherrif star hubs? not an expert but looks like it...

soyo gold star tubs...... fark fella's "hardly classic".... classic full stop - cept the chainring of course, thus my comment... may be a great race chainring but i, personally will never race that level and would go for a dura ace or 75 chainring

  • Are Araya titaniums NJS? I thought it would have 16Bs.

Also, I thought that the Keirin guys only apprenticed to one Italian each. Kiyo's was Rossini.

  • ok one guy - i wasn't sure, but well done on that count - think those rims are njs... lets me look up the website...

  • Even with the red bits?

because of the red bits. Red and white FTW. You should see my polo mallet!

    EDIT: Maybe not the crankset.

  • Kiyos have the same "Per Vincere" in the bottom bracket shell as Rossinis - to be honest, it took me ages to remember which Italian he apprenticed to, it is only since seeing a Rossini poster in Tour De Ville that it has stuck with me.

  • because of the red bits. Red and white FTW. You should see my polo mallet!

I'm sorry to say it, but I think the red bits were potatochopped in.

You should see my mallet, it's just a virgin piece of yellow pipe. I'm too lazy for this shit.

  • Yeah they look it, but I still like it. (Look at the rear wheel spokes, clearly coloured). Reckon tyres and saddle aren't tho.

  • tom. here's spec of this bike

I will consider myself corrected then, both about the rims and the number of builders he apprenticed to.

While the NJS thing is cool to a point, I just can't be bothered with it (personally). I ride clipless pedals, a saddle that is bearable to sit on and wheels that I'm not afraid to commute to the track, so my Kiyo fails the NJS test on a few levels.

It is worth pointing out, however, that although my Kiyo isn't as "legit" as that one, it is red, so it goes faster.

  • that merckx frame is wonderful.

  • Are Araya titaniums NJS?

    no

  • that merckx frame is wonderful.

    +1

And the Open Pro CDs look spot on.

  • And the Open Pro CDs look spot on.

But by using tubes with long valve stems, the whole look of the bike is wrecked and it becomes abject anti-porn :-)

Well, practicalities for us all is that we gotta change things up for our riding conditions - i really don't care either but, u put a nice bike up and people start calling u out about why you put it up - as you say it's something that really only a few people are really bothered about and even then on these pages it's a moan or just being a know it all..

multigrooves could be right on the whole titanium rims thing though, i'm not sure but i think i did see somewhere other than that source that they were njs

I wouldn't say the website i got that from is 100% trustworthy, they were trying to sell this bike so obviously being as "bothered" about it as they could... only put the spec sheet down just to clear things up, not to prove people wrong mate.

He probably did have one apprentiship too..

either way i am sure the red kiyo will still be a sight to behold ;)

    yeah,^ merckx is lurvly
