these SS 29ers all look to have tiny gears, what sort of inches do you run these things on? ive only recently started riding offroad, on what is a botched roadbike-cyclocross. im still trying to work out what kind of bike i want for this.

Both look to be running about 32/20, which is about 45" on a niner. Not many people go much over 2:1 on 26" XC bikes, which is about 53", unless they're on consistently flat terrain. I run 27/13 on my 26" bike, but that's for river bank rides. At Swinley, 27/15 would be better for playing.

Massive picture, but I think this is a beatifully elegant/subtle modern steel rooad frame. I dont usually like black bikes but think this would make a gorgeous bike.

Just being a race winning bike doesn't necessarily make it porn, otherwise we'd have ten generations of dull Trek roadbikes on here. That Yeti is so fugly that only its palmares save it from being bounced straight to anti porn
Haha! how rude, that Yeti was my old teenage crush ;) Perhaps it hasn't aged so well, but I still quite like it :)

I always ran 34x16 on my 26er, 34x18 on my 29er, and 32x20 on my Pugsley...and i lived in Scotland and rode the 7 Stanes red routes on those gears...a lot of people seem to run gears smaller than necessary on single speed mtb's in my opinion.

It is just opinion, though, same as gears on your fixed bike. If you're racing, the right gear is the one which gets you to the finish line fastest. If you're playing, it's the one which lets you have the most fun.

Very similar set up on this orange one
I'd love a One9, pity they don't do the orange any more. Niner's own fork is lust too
I came close to getting one of last years models, when they were on sale at Stif.co.uk. Just did'nt the right funds at the right time.

Its mainly due to the big wheels..
A) causing you to need a smaller ratio to achieve the same gear inches as a 26er, and
B) simply making the chainring look small.I think about 45-55" is the norm. I was planning to go 32:18 which is about 52" on a fat tyred 29er. I fell for the gates belt drive system though and ended up with 46:24 (46 is the smallest chainring at the mo), which is about 56". Hope I like the gear its bloody expensive to change :S

55". Very encouraging :)

I've seen smaller belt drive chainrings on mtb's before....how come you can't get a smaller one?

Not keen on the build of that BMW, but I love the olive green metallic on that BMW, best colour so far IMHO;

Me too. Also I've heard talk on US bike forums of a Gates 32t chainring. The website doesnt list it though. To be honest the bike is building up pretty light so it might not be an issue (plus I may be able to go up to a 25 or 26 t cog without needing a new belt if need be). Having short stocky legs, I prefer slightly higher gear anyway.

The new Brooklyn/Element frame at last...Porn for me....let the bitching commence.

• #18796
it looks bombproof. would be a good choice for trickery.
-

the original Gangsta was pretty bombproof with the exception of the fork (after all it wasn't designed with trick in mind).
the BMW/Element would be atomic-proof!

Having owned two Brooklyn downhill rigs, i can appreciate just how much fun can be had with bouncy bikes, but for xc stuff it just doesn't appeal to me anymore.
