I want these:

So do I.
I've put down a pathetically low amount, if it exceeds it then fair game (it will exceed it), but currently I'm top-bidder.

try auction sniping tools.
works for me , there are few "free" ones on the internet. There is a limit of free bids per month of course. -

I prefer the old ways, speed of horse (and accurate alarm system)

I'm not very good at eBay. I put down bids and enter the amount I'm willing to pay. If I get sniped, it's because I wasn't willing to pay it, if I win it's because others weren't willing to pay it. If you've put in what you'd realistically part with, then it doesn't matter if you do it this early or in the last few seconds.

That's true, but it can often work better to put your maximum on at the last moment because there are usually people who will peck away at your max bid. They often end up spending more than they perhaps should, but never the less, they still win. At least putting your max bid on at the last moment means that someone can't chip away in this manner and, I believe, you stand a better chance :)

The problem is that others dont bid that way. If you put in your maximum bid early on, it just allows someone to chip away at it, convincing themselves each time that they're willing to bid 'just another fiver' in order to beat you. Hold fire until the last few seconds and that won't happen.
Edit: Ahem, yes, exactly what CasaSteve just said.

+1
and Sniping (although usually pretty good if you want to win) takes the fun out of it. If I wasn't meant to have that limited edition artwork by Andy Dog of The the fame then I wasn't meant to have it. Same goes for the child size lamborghini diablo pedal car...

I also find that it's a useful method of self-discipline. Place my bid in the closing seconds and there's no temptation to keep raising my own maximum.

^This.
I put £1,100 in for my cooker, in the last 6 seconds.
When I got it for £184 I was quite please.

^ that, or when the BB shell detached from the seat tube on that bargain bike I bought.

-Yes, auto sniping is boring.
-Max bid early on just gets chipped away as said.
-All the excitement is had sitting infront of that countdown timer when it turns red, palms sweaty, heart pounding...well it used to have that effect when ebay was new. I tend to manually snipe within 10s of the end. That way you have your max bid, get it in last and hope for the best. it normally works well, but not with bike stuff for some reason. I can't seem to get a bargain at all. All my ebay bidding has ended in FF*S** recently, it seems people will pay anything over the odds for bike stuff...well at least the stuff I want anyway. Boohoo.

The best part of manual sniping is when you place a bid and the ebay tells you you need to log in...
