bidding fifty one pounds and a penny only makes sense if that is honestly the most you can afford. any other reason is bad advice. the bidding system will on your behalf bid to just above the maximum bid so there is no reason for you to try to guess what the other persons maximum is going to be in the last ten seconds.
in a nutshell:
if you were prepared to pay 70.00 for the sun frame you should have bid 70.00
if the under bidder was only prepared to pay 59.70 you would have won the frame for 60.70 even though you maximum was 70.00
if you had placed a bid for 58.70 they would have won it for 59.70

don't quote me but i think at a hundred pounds and over the difference has to be 2.00 and at a thousand pounds the difference has to be 10.00 pounds

But what coppi is saying (and always does, gawd bless im) is that if you bid what you think it's worth, you either get it (great!) or some other mug pays more than you fancied paying (that's life). If you are bothered about drawing attention to it, put your bid in very late. If you don't give a toss about gentlemanly rules, sign up to a sniping site. The point remains - fucking about with pennies when you were willing to pay pounds is a chumps game.
