They have a 7k feedback with 5 negatives from low count buyers, one of whom complained that he had to pay customs fees...
What are you wary about?

customs fees and also that they seemed a lot cheaper than elsewhere. inc p&p total about £190, anyone know if they have seen cheaper elsewhere or not?

Ask them to send it as a gift?

for that price why not buy from totalcycling.com - 200 quid and they're in the UK so no custom fees

Gifts are still subject to import duty and vat on the duty and delivery charge.
only if it is priced above a certain amount, gift plus value less than 60 bucks your fine

I've heard of a number of cases where having the item declared as a gift with a nominal value of, say US $10, has not led to a surcharge.

Declaring as a gift for the purpose of avoiding duty and tax is needless to say an offence and one the HMRC are well aware of. Reputable sellers won't do it, but the choice is of course yours. I mean its the government, right? Like benefit fraud, its OK to rip the government off because its our money anyway.
Probably should have? probably make a load if you split it. Same seller?
