He's a regular and big spender at the jumbles so sellers often hold items for him that we would never see.
He pays by cheque and asks the vendors not to cash them for a few weeks.
He's also known to snatch frames out of buyers hands and then using the famous Brick Lane phrase, "Hey that's my bike.''
He's a pro, doing something well which many of us would like to do.
That gets him special favours, and a few daggers thrown his way.

With the exception of snatching things out of peoples hands which is just plain rude the rest of it sounds like a bod trying to turn a crust. I have bought stuff from him. He is ok to buy from but his stuff does come cheap.

Looks pretty nice for a vintage build - seller sent me a photo of it built up:

hehe, not far off. people get upset because he goes early and spends money.
i bought a frame off him a few years back, he didn't send it for over a month and was throughly rude and arrogant in all communications. he deserves the reputation that precedes him on here.

I've had first had experience with Hilary Stone at bike jumbles as i too get up at the crack of dawn to delve into the jumblers treasures. I've got no qualms with competing with Mr Stone for bits but his lack of decency and dignity leaves a lot to be desired.
There is no doubt he is an expert in his field and a well connected one, fair dues with his experience and his knoweldge he commands his respect and some have said that he is forthgiving with advice wen asked. I've bought from him in the past myself and had no issues i was happy with the transaction.
However he has tried to steam roller me and my colleague on various occasions and i've had first hand experience of him trying to snatch a frame out of my hand when i've been in conversation with the vendor. He has also pushed his way into a vendors car whilst i've already expressed my interest in frames we have discussed and have been stood waiting whilst the vendor organises himself and not wanting to be rude, only to be overlooked when hilary shuffled up and into the car and helped himself. When i asked the vendor how much he was after for the frame Hilary bellowed that they were sold, and that "they were the rules of the jumble" even though they quite clearly werent as no price had been discussed and the vendor had said they were available.
The vendor sold them infront of me and though apologetic turned and said he had experienced the same with Hilary. Cheers mate, sod all i can do if the seller has no decency either and yes maybe i should HTFU but i never thought i'd have to go to jumbles and impose myself on these old boys and start riffling my way through their stuff before they've unpacked, harrassing them like some kind of vulture but being polite as i was brought up to be has got me no where.
I understand its business, early bird catches the worm and all that. Theres a few bob to be made, its not gonna make me a millionare but I get there early enough and often before him i'll be damned if i drive all over the place to be shafted like that. There are others there who do similar i've met most of the usual suspects some even from this forum and have no qualms with them, first come first serve thats fair enough but mark my words if it happens again you'll hear about it, because next time i'm gonna fuck him up.
