  • Hello again doods! This is my official intro. Can I have my restriction lifted? If not, whaddoo I have to do?

p.s. what is it with all the hippy tags??

  • Fear the hippy

  • No-one knows. They've appeared quite mysteriously.

  • Hi

John from Glasgow new on lfgss, currently riding an old 80's raleigh 10spd I converted last year, running on the first pair of wheels I've built (smug alert!). On the hunt for a nicer frame soon ...and nicer cranks/pedals/hubs/rims/bars/stem... yadda yadda, you get the picture!

  • they're pretty random that's for sure!

Anyone know if a slightly cracked bottom bracket is still useable?

  • It's really not a good idea. Consider that this is one of the most highly and continually stressed parts of your bike.

    +1

...time for a new frame I'd say!

  • Just to be clear, is it the shell (part of the frame) that you're talking about? Or the bb component?

It's the bottom bracket spinney thing! There's a crack running down by the axel

  • They are well old.. back when tags were first added.

  • None of them are about hippy, either.

The spinny thing is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottom_bracket which fits inside the frame. If it were broken, you could replace it and keep riding your bicycle. I'm still not sure whether you mean that or the frame, the BB shell. If it is the latter, you shouldn't still be riding that. If you keep riding it, the frame will break, causing you injury or death.

Ok It's definitely not the frame that's cracked, I was gonna post a pic but my camera won't pick it up <_< Anyways that's great news, thanks a bunch for that intel.
(can we give reps on this forum?)

  • You do want to replace the BB before riding it much further; if it disintegrates while you're riding, you may lose control of the bike. If I were you, I would ride it no further than your nearest local bike shop, buy a new BB and buy the two special tools needed to replace it and switch it right there (or get them to do it).

Yes, you can give rep (although maybe only once you're out of the nursery). It's more traditional to rep people for creative insults or irrelevant lunacy. Rewarding good advice would only encourage it.

  • I understand.

  • hi, i'm new to the forum. saw a really good fixed gear forum and decided to register :)

  • Hi Fazli!

    Welcome!

And glad you call it Fixed Gear rather than Fixhei (fixie)

  • New to this myself and look forward to contributing.

That's good; you'll have something to keep you occupied while you wait to get out of the nursery here.

  • Hi guys. Another newbie here.

Pointed in the direction of the forum by a couple of friends who use it and told me to head over here. The names Mike, live in St Helens (In between Manchester and Liverpool) Currently building up an old Raleigh that my dad had in the garage from in the early 80's.
