  • OK here goes, Long time lurker, been in the smoke since Uni in 93 (yes I is old, 38)

You have nothing to worry about on that score. Have a look on the "names and faces to bikes" thread and you'll see a lot of middle-aged men on fashion bikes. A lot of them dress like pubescent hipsters but don't let that fool you.

  • hahaha!!!

  • afternoon all,
im stu, new to the forum, in the midst of buying/building a bike to replace the old racer i left in leeds... thou it may take time due to work.

  • Hello. I've just arrived here.

Thought I'd poke around see what's going on.

PS. I'm not from London, does that count against me?

Most people in London are not from London.

  • Hi there! not that new to london fixed gear anymore but needed some advice. I have a current fixed gear project and have two wheels to chose from...

One is a Condor wheel with Condor hub that has only "condor 60 years" written on it...it looks quite good, not V shaped but more u shaped kind of thing...i was checking the condor website to find out about it and apparently its worth more than 70 quid... oh yes...the sprocket on this one has 16 t. and its still running very true.

The other one is a Alexrims 66Da or something like that i got off ebay...V shaped and stuff but the hub doesn't look as well made as the Condor one... the sprocket has 18 t. and its super true...it never stops spinning...so, not sure which to keep

I reckon i'll find out when i fit them both and realize which one i like more 16t or 18t sprocket...

but if you were me, which one would you go for?

  • go for the one which looks the best. The sprockets can be swapped easily.

  • Enjoyed your post Blue Fleet. Have you thought of signing up for http://www.thelondonclassic.org/?p=235 ? You could probably get up Canonbie Road on your mountain bike.. I've got a red bike so I would still beat you.

  • Thanks sumo! Another question, need to cut my steerer tube but shops charge around 25 to 30 quid, is there a cheap shop that you guys would recommend?

    Thanks!

  • Do it yourself. You can get a hacksaw or pipe cutter for about £5.

  • Yes, that's not much of an issue i'd say, thing is i don't know how to thread it

  • @ Titivulus, thanks for that, this is just the sort of thing I was after.

I did see that link and watched a bit of the video. That route does look a bit lumpy, definately gears or do you think its manageable on 50/16? Is Canonbie Road as steep as it gets? I've never been up that road but may go over and reccy it to test it out.

OK it seems ages away but I will put me name down and decide on approriate steed later.

O right. I assumed it was threadless. Best get the shop to do it then.

  • Ey up,
I'm Dan, 21 and a music student living in Shepherds bush. New to the forum and new to fixies. Just bought a CREATE from a local shop and intend to make some nice changes to it. Had a beautiful late 80s Dawes racer which was stolen from outside my flat so after losing her, I've made a switch to fixies and don't know a great deal about them. Also don't know any riders up in London yet so I fully intend to join the West End lot from here at the pub for a few and to join in with a few of the city rides!

  • Blue Fleet, I guess you might nip round the South Circular to check out some hills before the event.. If you can get up Sydenham Hill opposite the Horniman Museum riding fixed, then you are a God. The choice of bike is down to which one you are prepared to leave outside while you watch the Paris-Roubaix in the Alma. Last year, no one was holding their bike in the bar whilst watching, which is why I will not be riding my blue one.

  • heyo,

Looking to get a project underway so this seemed like the place to come.
    Nice to meet y'all.

  • New here so Hello all. Just finishing my first s/s project built around a 1972 Witcom. I'll post a pic when (a) it's complete and (b) I learn how to do it.
