  • i would disagree with Emyr. As someone who has his fair share of spectacular crashes and has very little skill with a truing key, my polo life is alot easier and my wheels much truer since ive got 48 spoke 26' wheels. Its overkill for sure but i want to spend as little time as possible fixing my polo bike so a slightly heavier wheelset is a small price to pay for me. 48 spoke ftw

  • I'm running 1.1 on the 719 fine. On the rear too.

  • 719s are ok, but if you want an undestructible polo wheel use ex721s..they come disc or rim brake. A little heavier, but burly enough to retrue to perfection every time. Don't get dents nearly as easy as 719s and build straight as fuck.. =wheel with nice even tension. I've used both for 3 years, the 719 I relegated to the rear because of dents..mostly from ruperts shot..same shot that dented my tube. So as long as you don't try to save ruperts goals 719s are fine, otherwise go 721.

Also, eyelets in 719s (newer batch) don't like as much tension as they used to..theyre a bit pussy IMO.

  • Although I reckon the 1.25 tyres I have are about as thin as you could go on the 719s.

I use 26x1 1/8 on my 719 and 721. Is no problem boss man.

  • When I can be bothered, I've got all the stuff for it.
    Fixcraft hubs
    Sapim Race spokes
    Velocity NoBS rims

Those spokes are to anorexic for polo get fat bastards. Alpine 3 dt. Potentially overkill, kinda awesome though.

  • NoBS.
    Tee-hee!

  • I would say 48h is your best bet. I have shot through 36h 26" wheels so stay away from 32.

That said, it could have been the wheel was badly maintained and maintenance is key no matter what number of spokes you have.

I have been running 48h 3x 700c wheels for slightly over 2 years now, only ever broken 2 spokes on the rear, none on the front which has a disc and I only have to give them a good truing every month or so.

  • 36h 26s are fine for most mortals, you'll be fine... Make some disks if you're worried... Simplox©...

  • Yeah, got a special deal on the Sapim Race, so I thought I'd try them.

  • So much rotating weight.

  • I'm after a pair of 721s, rim brake version... Who's got the best deals?

  • But 32 is too few, 4 spokes don't weigh much.

    Merge!

  • Are 32h no go whatsoever as I've just come across a set of velocity deep vee 26inch 32 spoke for rather cheap.

  • I've recently switched from 1.35 kojacs to 1.1 durano and the grip is better, but it still feels a little sketchy cornering at speed. Kojacs are hopeless during winter sessions.

Some facts and figures for 26 options:

    -kojac (folding) 1.35 - 295g
    -Durano (folding) 1.35 - 395g
    -Durano (folding) 1.1 - 260g
    -Ribmo (folding) 1.25 - 330g
    -Detonator (folding) 1.25 - 265g
    -Detonator (wire) 1.25 - 305g
-Wild Run 'R - seems to be only one option with this - 1.4 and the weight is 420g!

I'm gonna try some detonators, same weight as the skinny 1.1 duranos but more tyre mass.
Rob, did you get yours from ebay? Can't seem to find any uk sellers of the 26 x 1.25??

Did you try the detonators Chan?

What width 26" tyres are people using? Also how much noticeable difference is there between 1.125 and 1.1/8 tyres?

  • You'll need to true it quite often and probably run double disc.

  • If you're OK with disc covers they should be alright, they won't be much less strong as a complete wheel but losing a spoke can be more of a problem as there are less other spokes to take up the slack, if they're very cheap then go for it, but if it's just a bit cheap I'd hold out for some 36.

  • Chan has been rocking the detonators, but swapping back and forth a bit, he said he noticed the slower rolling, not sure if the grip has convinced him yet. I'm sold, despite getting a few too many punctures for my liking.

  • Thanks for the input guys.

    I've come across http://purefixcycles.com/collections/wheelsets-1/products/pure-fix-26-fgfs-wheelset

Seem alrite for the money one problem however, 14mm axles no real mention of the details on the hub or the rear spacing. No MSW

My frame is an old steel mountain bike that I believe took an 7 or 8 speed.

So I'm left a little bit in the dark, axle issue will mean I need to grind out my drop outs or file down the axles. I'm more inclined to file the axles rather than touch the frame. Rear hub spacing is totally unknown but more than likely 120 but not sure if the axle will have the length to fit my current frame.

  • Definitely not 120 spacing.

  • Definitely not 120 spacing.

    You think they are smaller?

I suppose it all really depends on the axle length whether they will fit

  • Weird 14mm will usually be 110mm for BMX or 135mm for dirt jump bikes or similar, these are marketed as FGFS and are flip flop so could well be a strange 14mm 120mm thing, I've not seen bikes for these but guess they might make FGFS ones like it as they are like big BMX type things. I've filed a 14mm axle without a problem, it makes it a little more awkward to get the wheel in and out and you need to be careful to file the slots in the same place on either side. I probably wouldn't bother as it seems like a load of extra faf.

Yeah but I see nothing better for the price point and to be honest I might just grind out the frame and fork

  • Just do the axle, it's only 2mm off either side and half of that is thread. Are you in the US or Canada by any chance?

  • yeah just in san jose moved here in August

  • Also how much noticeable difference is there between 1.125 and 1.1/8 tyres?

Well the graphics are different but the width is mathematically equal.
