Road Wheels & Road Wheel Recommendations?

I was looking at the Extralite myself but ended up with a Tune, CX Ray, Stans hand built running Ultermo tubeless setup as I got a great deal on a set of ex show wheels from a reputable wheel builder in Germany. The wheels came in only slightly heavier when I weighed them which I put down to a difference in hub weight and lower spoke count used on the front. Also if you look on WW there are reports of certain brands of tyres blowing off Stans rims so that may be also something to consider before diving in.

When I was looking AM Classic Mag are like chicken teeth to find for sale .. all stockist I asked said they were available to order only.

  • Mavic CCU, thoughts?

  • Carbon fibre is an inappropriate material for spokes, steel does the job better because you can get the same stiffness and strength in a smaller cross section, which is good for your aeros, not to mention it's cheap and easily replaceable, which isn't the case for most carbon spokes.

  • If youre lucky enough to have this decision...

If I had to replace my wheels, and funds aside. I'd get the ENVE 6.7

  • HED Ardennes Plus FR?

    Anyone got a view?

  • pricey!

  • ^^ my only comment is to check if there are any issues with running a rim that wide with your current brakes and/or your stays.

  • Asking for a friend. He has a fairly new road bike equiped with disc wheels that needs a new rear. Can anyone recommend a disc specfic rim he should go for? He weighs 95kg or so so needs to be sturdy. I told him 32h, possibly 36h archetype but if there are disc specific rims then that could be better. Budget is around 50 or 60 pounds.

    Ta

  • Being a rear, at his weight and discs I'd def go for a 36h and probably with strong spokes like the Alpine III's.

Can't recommend a rim though. I'd have though there must be plenty of narrow 29"er disc rims about. I'd pick something common and not too heavy.

  • I have an Alex EN24 on one bike and no complains. It's cheap

  • Thinking about building a new wheelset, I've got a general idea of what I want, wide rim and decent hubs at around the 1.5kilo mark, it's not going to be full weight weenie but weight will play a small factor, I'm 85kg so am looking at 24/28, i've narrowed it down to a few options but want opinions:

    Rims:
    Pacenti sl23's or Archetypes
Not much to split them but I feel that the uneven wearing of the anodising on the archetypes may annoy me and the sl23's are lighter and 1mm wider so moar aeroozzzzz (apparently; but if it is it'll be very marginal)

    Hubs:
Really liking the look of the DT Swiss 350s (374g and £220), if I got them I'd go straight pull so 24/28 (what i wanted anyway), they have the same internals as the critically acclaimed 240s (317g and £315) but for the sake of 57g, £95 and losing the straight pull i'd rather go 350s.

Then there's the American Classics rd205 and 58 hubs amounting to 263g, and witstanleys have got them for £180 per pair, but there's mixed reviews regarding durability, specifically around the bearings, this seems to be on earlier models though so i'm not sure if that's changed when they got a re-design in 2012, as there's been few reviews since then. On top of that there's the fact that eventually converting them to 11 speed will cost more, and seems like quite a task with re-wheel dishing etc. as opposed to the dt's where it's: remove a spacer. But for 111grams and £40 I'm not sure whether it's worth it

    Spokes:
Not really thought about them yet, might go bladed, might not. Either going to be Dt Swiss competition's or aerolites.

So what do you all think? Changes and reccomendations are welcome too

  • Not much to offer other than that I have the American Classic hubs, have ridden the shit out of them and they've never been touched as far as maintenance goes. About 2.5 years and still as good as new.

  • 1mm wider so moar aeroozzzzz

Only if the rim shape is otherwise identical, and the tyre ends up exactly matching the rim width. Maybe. Aero is much more complicated than that. You still get the ride and handling benefits of better tyre shape, so I'm not saying don't do it, but if you were actually bothered by aero you wouldn't be getting 24+ spoke metal rimmed wheels anyway.

I'd always go the extra few quid and couple of ounces of Alpine III over Comps, and CX-Rays are at least as good as Aerolites and cheaper due to the DT hipster tax

  • ^^cheers, makes my descision even harder!

^first bit - completely agree, the ride/handling are why i've chosen those two, the aero comment was literally some wheelbuilding company saying that they might be a little bit more with 23's because of tyre shape, i'm not factoring this as a reason at all

second bit, i remember you reasoning in the wheelbuilding thread and now agree, but they don't do the alpine iii in straight pull for the 350s, and the main reason for the alpine is more material round the spoke bend which isn't a massive factor on straight pull?
if i go with the american classics it'll be alpine iii's

  • the main reason for the alpine is more material round the spoke bend which isn't a massive factor on straight pull?

    True

Got any piccies of your wheels Oswald, and an exact weight?

  • I've heard good things about DT350s but thought they were 28 and 32h only?

  • The straight-pull ones are 24h F and 28h R

  • Got any piccies of your wheels Oswald, and an exact weight?

    Sorry WW fail here!

I have just snapped a pic of the front for you with KCNC skewer in place and Ultermo in place - the rear setup puts my scale out of limits.

An approximate weight is 595g .. Deducting manufacturers claimed weights of 20g skewer, 290g tyre, 20g sealant, 8g valve and 10g rim tape. Adding manufacturers claimed weights for components in the wheel build alone would give 547g. So I figure it's between those two weights. Bear in mind there's only 20spokes in that wheel vs 24 in the HyperClinch though ..

  • ^^ Ok.

  • ^^ You weighed them MUDDY?

    There's about 10g straight away... #weightweeniefail

Seriously, thanks for that though - very interesting. I might try and find a light/wide rim and build my own climbing wheels.

That's the joy of being ~63kg I guess, 20/24 is a reasonable spoke count.

  • It was wet last Sunday! ... #Hangsheadinshame

  • right then going for an all-american wheelset bar the spokes, american classic's laced to archetypes 1x 24h front and 2x 28h rear with dt competitions that i have left over, means that it'll be sub £300 and should come in at about 1.4kg, hopefully that's enough money to mean that i've got a light and strong wheelset when the "strong, light, cheap, pick two" mantra is applied
