Road Wheels & Road Wheel Recommendations?

  • Yes wheels would be the best use of your money. What kind of circuits? I would imagine that for crit racing (I only race track and tt's) that a low weight film would be useful and a hub with more engagements - easier to get back up to speed after breaking in corners etc. 'aero' wheels are often a bit heavier and don't spin up to speed that fast - though they do stay fast for less effort once you're there.

You'd be going way too slow if you can tell the difference in the number of pawls when racing on the road.

  • I weigh 65kg. I've only just started 4th Cat but was surprised by the number of people racing with Zipps / reynolds / powertap at Hillingdon. Sounds like I just need to spend more time on trainer road.

  • ^People wanna look Pro, that's nice :]

  • So the answer hasn't changed since I said exactly that at the top of his page back in November :-)

It hasn't change since I answered it in 2003 and probably since you answered it in 1993.

Stick with what you have and you'll be surprised at the number of bunchfodder failing to do a thing on their Zipp and Reynolds or worse yet, turning them into carbon spaghetti in their quest for the 10 points or whatever it is to move out of the DeathRace™ zone. ;)

  • 12 now.

    To stop one race heros.

  • Just means going from the gun and lapping the field in two races. No bother. ;)

  • I'm looking to go down the China route for deep carbon wheels. Would I be best off just buying the rims and building them over here sourcing all the parts separately, or is the build quality OTP such that I should just buy them built?

    Thanks

  • I would buy complete and then get a good local wheelbuilder to check them over/re-tension.

  • If offered the choice, which out of the Zipp 202, HED Stinger 3, or ENVE 3.4 wheelset would be the one you would pick and why?

All tubular, 11 speed Shimano for the use of.

  • Zipp 303FC, for the P-R proven toughness

    Zipp 303FC

    lol

  • Zipp 202 FC front, 303 FC rear. That's what I'd get. Well, it's what I have just got. But I like Zipps.

  • Where from Danstuff?

  • Front from Wiggle, rear from Merlin.

  • Hmm, I've had a couple of pairs of Zipps now.

  • Well, it looks as though the 202/303FC combination is still available. 552 for the front from Wiggle, 615 for the rear from Merlin (in their Zipp Wheel Sale section). It's Campag, but I got a Shimano 11 speed freehub from Sigma for 76 quid using a combination of discount codes and loyalty discounts. Not cheap, by any means, but a lot less than RRP and not bad for the money.

  • Not tempted to run a Campag cassette?

Zinn and others maintain that the 11 speed cassettes are interchangeable between the Fishing Reel/Romanian tractor groupsets.

  • Not at the moment, as all my groupsets are 10 speed, including the SRAM Force groupset which is destined to be used with these wheels. I did look at Campag cassette prices, but by the time you get a Super Record 'lots of titanium' cassette which is comparable in terms of weight with a SRAM PowerDome cassette the extra cash for the Campag cassette is enough to pay for a Shimano freehub.

I've now got a selection of 3 different Zipp Campag freehubs though, so if I ever felt the urge to change, I would not be short of options.

  • It's very tempting- no Zipp hub prior to the black ones can run Shimano 11 speed, but they can run Campag 11, which works with Shimano now...

  • Yep, if it's for an 11 speed bike and you're happy running a Campag cassette, you wouldn't have to change the freehub on the Merlin 303FC rear.

  • And Campag cassettes are renowned for their affordability, after all.

  • Does anyone have any experiences with Extralight Hyperclinch or American Classic Mags?
