  • I recently saw this book online - well it does have quite an eye-catching title!

Has anyone on here come across it?

  • ^^ Have fun, too--we should get there later in the day.

'Nuturing' certainly caught my eye. People who can't even proofread book covers can go and do one. >>>>>>>>>>>

    :)

  • There's just so much fail on that one little cover.

Imagine what the actual recipes are like!

  • Oops, sorry, Shelby, forgot to reply. 10:30 is fine by me. Where can you think of that would be good for meeting up? We did LMNH Old Street for the ride south, but that would be a fair bit out of our way for this ride, unless others wanted to join in?

I guess LMNH isn't really on the way. Doesn't look like anyone else is going, so Jamie and I would be happy to meet you wherever. What route were you planning to take? I thought Euston/Marylebone Road would be the most straight forward way but I do want to avoid going through there if possible.

  • I wouldn't normally go to Kensington via the A501 but through town--Rosebery Avenue, Holborn, Shaftesbury Avenue, Piccadilly, Knightsbridge, Kensington. I'll PM you about meeting up.

  • Great excursion--shame you couldn't make it, Alex, but lovely to see you later!

  • To limit one's diet, whether it's only eating plants or going on a juice "cleanse" or insisting on fresh organic offal, is a sign today of one's wealth and one's self-worth.

can't be bothered to waste my time deconstructing this article but this actually almost made me laugh. the constant corollary drawn between veganism and wealth by this journalist (who's cropped up before and whose work i don't appreciate) is both bizarrely superficial and sadly unrefuted. being vegan does not implicitly mean buying only super organic extra fresh ridiculously expensive produce. as a vegan who works in the food industry and lives a fairly frugal but healthy life i should know that pretty well.

as an aside the fact that she calls herself a lifelong vegetarian with other dispositions is the cherry on the facepalm cake. there are a lot of different reasons why people are vegan and we're obviously not of the same ilk. whatever. i hope beyonce enjoys being vegan, as if the chatter of layfolk has any impact on her affectations.

  • I think she attempted to make fun of those vegans whose motivation is that it's a trendy diet. She wasn't implying that all vegans have that motivation.

Myself, I cannot see anything wrong in someone's being a vegan because it's cool (if it is cool in someone's opinion). Of course, it does get a bit silly if you're wearing lots of fur at the same time.

  • Wow, this lady really likes kale: http://jlgoesvegan.com

  • ^^^^ And Hadley, I am disappoint. How many inappropriate analogies, sweeping generalisations and backhanded compliments can you fit in to one silly article? An awful lot it would seem.

  • Could I be the last to notice that apparently Vantra has reopened? It's now on Oxford St
    http://www.vantra.co.uk/contact/
If its still essentially all you can eat, then I will have to dust off the ol' wheelchair.

  • Where was Vantra before? I've never been there.

  • Hm, I have to say that I find this claim to be just a tad overambitious:

Vantra is revolutionising eating and drinking. We are the first restaurant to create and serve genuinely healthy food and drink.

    http://www.vantra.co.uk/menu/

Only took restaurants a couple of hundred years to get there. :)

OK, I'm not clicking on that because even in the Guardian it's all the fucking same - just say if the comments aren't the usual mix of:

    • I had a dinner party once - a vegan came, threw all the meat into an incinerator and insisted I grated carrots for everyone and we all chanted for Gaia
    • I'm off for a big bleeding steak, lol!
    • stop preaching to me, and stick to knitting lentil sandals with your beard
    • vegans can't get enough protein because you only get that from meat and nothing else ever
    • veganism is tantamount to child abuse
    • all the rainforests are really just being destroyed so vegans can have soya milk

and so on and so forth etc usw...

  • It was next to the hare krishna place off soho square then shut down for ages which was a shame as it was good value. Glad to see it is back and with wild claims!

  • ^^
Ah, carnist bingo! Need to include "I could never give up bacon".
Its funny the aggressive responses people give to the mention of veganism. Much like cycling...

The article is written by one of the promoters of Veganuary. It's very positive. As for comments, I have to admit that I've rather enjoyed the Guardian site more since comments started to be dependent on some sort of Javascript, which I've switched off via NoScript. :)

  • Didnt Vantra become Vitao? Vitao recently closed and Im pretty sure the place on oxford street is the same place with a different name, decor/buffet is identical.

  • Where was Vantra before? I've never been there.

It was called Vitao before, and it was Wardour St or somewhere around there. I've been a couple of times, really good food.

  • Na, they were separate locations then when vantra closed it apparently mobed in some capacity to vitao (although I couldnt see how it was manifesting its presence at vitao). Didnt know vitao wasnt thereany more tho. Anyone up for an important fact finding mission to the new location?

  • The awesome Vegan Peasant catering team are doing a new series of suppers:

    http://veganpeasantcatering.com/2014/01/saporous-suppers-2/

Well worth the price of admission. This is gourmet food.

  • Zucca on Bermondsey Street?

Not recommended for vegans. Or even vegetarians.

  • ^ A propos of what?

Did you just go there and found it wanting?
