My dad was the most friendly, kind generous man you could ever meet. A bit of a local celebrity in Hereford. We owned a couple of restaurants at the time and just because the local Kebab owner was in vaguely the same line of work my dad used to take all his rubbish to the tip once a week.
Unfortunately my dad died suddenly one day. I was about 16 at the time.
Amazingly word never got round to this Kebab shop owner. He must have thought that my dad had simply decided to stop collecting his rubbish.
About 3 or 4 months later I'm out with my siblings and we visit the Kebab shop for a dirty Kebab. the owner recognises me and asks us how our dad is! the place was was quite busy and we are to gobsmacked to tell the truth so we just say 'Yeah not too bad, thanks'. This happened on at least another 2 occasions, to myself and to my siblings. Hawkward.

A similarly awful thing happened to me over 10 years ago. I was visiting a cinema and bumped into an old college friend working there, it was just a few months after a mutual friend of ours had died. The conversation turned to the mutual friend, she asked "oh - how is mutual friend? I haven't heard from her in ages..." I'm still not sure how I dealt with this situation, I told her, of course - but then made some lame excuses and left... still feel dreadful about it.
