  • Hey, actually not gonna make it, got too much on, don't have my cross bike with me, and was fiddling around with the rear hub last night, and need to take it apart really.
    count me out now.
buying a mallet soon though! Any suggestions of a decent one? or is magic polo 'the only place to go'?

  • is magic polo 'the only place to go'?

    It's not, but go there.

  • Miles G:

Rik and Perro poles are available from the LHBPA via http://www.lhbpa.org/shop/

This is just my personal opinion, no scales or science involved and not sponsored by anyone.

I prefer Rik over Perro and Magic poles and that's just because of my style of play. I am now using a Milk head/Rik shaft and a FixCraft head/Magic shaft because I was given the Milk mallet for free and I want to try out the FC head and Magic shaft.

In terms of durability, Rik is the best. Regular Perros and Magic Purple are slightly more bendy compared to Rik. While the Magic Black dents the easiest, it is the lightest of all poles and combined with their Black Magic head gives you the lightest mallet which allows you nimbler control of your mallet. You would be suprised how many big hitters use the black head and shaft combo.

Ski poles from charity shops is another option, cheap but depending on the brand and the aluminum grade, can bend or snap quite easily. That said, one of my favourite pole was a Rossignol ski pole which lasted me about 8 months.

As for mallet heads, there are plenty on the market, Magic Black is lighter than the Green ones which last longer; Milk Black is lighter than the Milk White (which last longer).

A capped head would give you a better shot but will cost a fair bit more than a DIY one with some gas pipe cut into 120mm-ish and a drill. You could pick the gas pipe offcuts from beside road works for free. Hope this helps.

  • hey guys,
can't make it, but if you are nearby (E14) and want to borrow a mallet feel welcome to pop by. (msg me)
