  • SJSC have them with Novatec decals, Planet X have them with On-One decals. Either way, they are about £50/pr posted.

According to Amey fitzrovia cycles will get them in for you.

  • Posting to give a huge thumbs up to Rose bikes for spokes etc after my first order with them this week, order -> delivery was 3 days and < £40 for the DT Swiss Champion & 12mm nipples gor 2x32 spoke wheels.

I generally support my lbs but for specific stuff like this direct mailorder of this standard and value is great.

  • Does anyone know where I can get tie and soldering done with a wheelbuild?

  • According to Amey fitzrovia cycles will get them in for you.

    yep

  • Does anyone know where I can get tie and soldering done with a wheelbuild?

Yes, go to 1970, that was the last time anybody thought it was a good idea.

  • It's pretty easy to do but pretty pointless too.

  • Extremely so, came with my track wheelset, either claim to improved stiffness or prevent nipple from unscrewing itself, but ultimately it make it difficult to replace spoke.

  • well in the interest of period correctness....

  • .. many wheels weren't tied and soldered
    still period correct ?

  • I'm building up a set of wheels and I wondered if anyone had any experience with Kinlin rims and if they're any good?

Presumed Open Pros would be the best bet for a balance between weight, strength and durability but would love to know anyone had any better ideas?

    Ta

  • I think they make some of halo's stuff, I really rate my halo freedom disc rims on my polo bike.

  • Just got an answer from Mack (hubs) - set of high flange fixed / fixed (20/24h) in black will cost me 267 Euro, including shipping and will take approx 7-8 weeks to manufacture.

Either way, I just bought a set of Hed Carbonlites on Royce hubs. Stoked.

  • Where can I get Novatech road hubs (for gears) in the UK?

  • Even pro wheelbuilders seem to recommend ordering from Bdop as UK distro is flakey

  • How the hell can Rose sell this wheelset for less than I can buy the components?

I'm thinking of Open Pros on 105s with DT Comps as my first build, but it seems silly to buy the bits and build myself when I can get the whole thing already built for less money and just check it over when it arrives.

  • Economies of scale

  • You could probably get the separate parts for a bit less by shopping around, Rose can sell for less than their compenent prices because they have got you to buy everything from them all at once. Also, AFAIK, if you buy Shimano hubs from Rose you get retail boxed, whereas their wheel shop will use OEM packaged, that represents a significant saving.

  • True, all dat.

Prices I could find from Google shopping: hubs are £22 front, £38 rear, rims £40 each, spokes 50p each, give or take. That's already £172 without nipples, washers and the build, compared to £160 delivered from Rose. Why would anyone buy separate and build themselves?

Edit: That particular build, I mean.

  • ^ practice / learning, satisfaction of building own wheelset?

  • internal nipples on a tubular rim? Opinions?

I had a pair of 50mm carbon tubs for racing track - crashed in September and broke the back wheel. Got around to ordering a new 82mm rim to rebuild it from PX. Had it knocking about for a while and eventually gave it to mr Jimbilly who has just told me it's drilled for internal nipples.

Should I just cut my losses and flog the rim?

  • search for the "yellow beast" thread in current projects, polka dot gives a pretty thorough tutorial on what to do with the rim if you want to keep it

  • It's not entirely clear on that thread if he is building with internal nipples or doing some kind of clever bodge with special external ones. Maybe I'm not reading it right..

  • well they are planet x rims so internal nipples on internal nipple rims will be what he's using, i think, i don't have any experience of them so i'm probably not the best person to ask

  • these look a bit of a bargain: http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/product/detail/aid:401802

is there anything that can beat that for that price? Want some tough all year road wheels for long rides and touring.

  • Open Pro is too narrow for touring, build something with Rigida Grizzly if you're after cheap and strong. Ambrosio Zenith hubs seem a popular budget choice if you want cartridge bearings, but Shimano Tiagra are fine too.
