  • OP's are fine for up to 28's. That's a good deal. Ambrosio / Nova hubs would be better though.

I've got no problem with OP's - done me well for ages. Unfashionable these days though.

  • Harry Rowland will do you OP's to ambrosio for 220 ish with Sapim race.

  • 220 is quite a step up from 150

  • Your point? You suggested ambrosio in the first place - I was just putting a price on the build from good wheelbuilder.

  • Easy tigers...

  • Ambrosio Zenith £72
    Rigida Grizzly £34
    DT Alpine III £25
    DT Hex nips £10

Building the right wheels for the job: priceless*

    *actually £141 + labour

  • = About £45-50 more

  • Or about free, which I think is what he's getting at in the wheel building thread, but I'm sure you can both make an argument out of it.

  • OP's are fine for up to 28's.

In my experience, 28mm felt like crap on the Open Pro, max for comfort would be 25mm on that rims.

  • re: cost, part of the self build / master built / factory built decision will be based on the individual valuing their own time versus the end outcome and product quality, possibly even waiting times too.

  • got a question and don't know where best to ask, here's probably the best place:

rim tape, i have velocity a23 rims 18mm inner rim width and 23mm outer, what width rim tape do i need? i assume 18mm?

  • Maybe 20mm. The "inner width" is between hooks, but because they overhang, the actual rim bed is a bit wider than that. Depends on which tape, too. Snap-on plastic ones need to cover the whole width to hold them centred, but sticky tape just needs to overlap the spoke holes enough to be safe.

  • it's this stuff tester, snap on, so no sticky tape http://www.acycles.co.uk/hutchinson-rim-tape-70020mm-pack-of-2-9272.html , so you reckon 20mm?

  • Velocity have instructions, but that is for the latest tubeless compatible A23, which has a shelf for the tyre bead. For the older ones, 20mm wide snap-on tape should be fine.

  • Yeah, I did see that, thought that it might be asking here for other opinions, cheers, 20mm it is!

  • Keep trying to buy a pair of A23s from Hubjub and keep getting forgotten about which is pretty poo :(

email convos with two different people and phone convo with one of them.

Still I'm in no rush as my hubs are still on the orient express, and they are a pretty small outfit so have to give some leeway i guess.

The H Plus Sons are nicer looking IMO, but the A23s are cheaper and can be run tubeless which I'm assuming may be a plus if I plan on using them for cross? So A23s are winning out

Get the cheaper TB14-style KinLin ADHN that cost £15.

    Or;

    Rigida Grizzly £34

Mavic A319 £27 is also worth looking at.

  • Looking at building up a new set of lightweight clinchers to replace my very worn R500's (and my 50mm carbon tubs as I don't use them enough and the braking sucks down decent sized descents).

Most likely will go with Novatec A291SB-SL / F482SB Rear for the hubs. Sapim Laser spokes with Sapim Alloy nips. Rims I am trying to decide between Kinlin XR200 or XR-19W. The XR200's are ~25g lighter and cheaper too, but the XR-19W's have eyelets and supposably produce a stronger build. Any opinions on the two? (Currently heading towards the 19's as doubt I'd notice 50g worth of weight and a more dependable build is attractive) Most likely to be built 24/28 hole (I'm ~70kg). Weight should end up around 1375 for the XR-19W's or 1325g using the XR200's.

The Kinlin's are also out of stock, although they will take your money before telling you that.

  • A la velodrome shop?

  • Brass nips.

  • Sapim say their anodised 7075T6 nips are at least as strong and corrosion resistant as their brass ones

  • Do you reckon they will be? I've only ever had bad experiences with alu nips. Any reviews after a bit of use in the rain?

  • I'd worry less about rain than winter - salt spray is the usual killer with dissimilar metals in contact.

  • I have alu nipple on the CX bicycle, it come standard with the wheelset.

Wheel suddenly taco'd due to the nipple breaking halfway through winter.
