  • I am amazed by the numer of anti porn builds around. Based on this porn worthy frames.

  • I think ChrisG found the same thing- the number of good looking Serotta builds is vanishingly small.

  • Time to reset the balance dammit.

That nasty build I posted has a nice frame finish. With a light blue fork, silver componentry, and some white finishing. It could look real nice.

  • Not saying my bike is rad or anything but I have Force on a steel frame with a quill and I think it looks alright. I think the main thing is colour matching.

    Same here! :)

  • It had crossed my mind, but I know I get on with Shimano.

To be honest I'm vacillating wildly about how to build this up, 7700 would be period correct (as would 10 speed Record?) but finding that stuff in very good condition is a) hard and b) it's pretty expensive.

Buying a modern groupset/parts is very straightforward, by comparison.

But would look out of place with a quill stem.

    Godamn.

I've got as far as deciding I'd quite like either Ambrosio Nemesis OR 20mm carbon tubular rims with Pave tubs.

It's going to be a while until the frame is sorted so you've got plenty of time. Parts at reasonable prices will come up, you just need to keep your eyes peeled. Also you only really need the shifting and braking elements of the groupset to start. The rest can be switched easily.

Personally I would stick with 7700, but you could always go 7800 with a 7700 crankset. What about '07 / 10 speed Chorus? It should be a bit cheaper and isn't it effectively the same as record? Ultimately though Shimano is just that bit easier with wheels and cassette options.

As for wheels, 20mm matt carbon tubs would be great, or on this era of frames I always like the idea of deep silver alu rims. If you want to splash out, Zipp 101's, or for cheap polished kinlin xr-380 (I think someone on one of the MTB forums did that for their road bike).

  • Found a very nice one imo. Just copy it minus tape and saddle.

  • Serotta have a replacement seat tube, looks like ~$100 with shipping (to Talbot).

  • Win!

  • Very much so- 34.9 (BB) to 28.6 (seat-clamp) is impossible to get anywhere else it would seem.

  • That's really lucky but I guess you deserve some luck! Keep this updated!

Saw a Ti version of this (raw) at the lights on OKR yesterday looked draw dropping Lu nice!

    What rims/hubs?

  • I have a mental image of 20mm carbon tubs, and some variety of 11 speed hub.

  • ~$100 with shipping! I'd say that's a huge win .. I honestly was thinking you'd get quoted 3 to 4x that with it being Serotta and also the additional manipulation of the tubing

  • I'm estimating the shipping- they said $70 for the tube, which has too be sent to a framebuilder (which is no problem as it'll go straight to Talbot).

This is significantly better than paying $500 plus shipping the frame to them for the repair.

Somewhat ironically the decal set is over 50% of the cost of the tube.

  • I'm thinking:

    20mm carbon rims
    Novatec hubs
    6800 groupset
Ti seatpost I picked up from the classifieds
Old Arione I had knocking around
3TTT Status stem (£15 delivered off eBay)
3TTT bars (came with the frame)
    Black Fizik tape

  • Ti stem would look good with all of that.

    Wheels sound tasty!

  • Serotta did make a Ti quill stem- however I don't think they are that easy to get hold of.

  • $35 stickers! same fantasy land as Zipp .. although I don't I know the true cost of decal production.

Oh and I really don't like them bars ..

  • Serotta detailing and finishing is where most of the money on a Serotta goes.

Not to say that justifies the cost of the stickers, but it's par for the course with Serotta that you're paying for the finish and presentation as much as you are paying for the item.

  • I'm going to give the bars a go because I've got them.

The decals are pricey, but that balances the (I think very cheap) tube, so overall I'm happy.

  • And the colour of the bars matches the stem.

  • Perfect.

This is going your way Dammit, should be a sweet build.

  • There's a threadless 1" for sale at the moment, you'll find a quill sometime.
    There are others too.

  • 100% necessary to buy that stem.

  • just as a bit of a watch out on the price of shipping the tube over, serotta quoted me $25 (+postage) for replacement barrel adjusters. Postage for a single small envelope was charged at $45 when the invoice came through and i was subsequently stung with a £21.51 customs charge as apparently you have to pay tax on the value of item + shipping value. A $25 part ended up costing about £65.
