  • why wipe and restore? Do a clean wipe (format and new OS) back up data (which is not apps) manually and copy the data manually after fresh OS install and fusion drive and reinstall apps, with SSD I dont imagine it will take you more than couple of hours for all this.

  • With apple restore all the old stuff (that is making your machine sluggish) will be copied again.

  • Ohhh good advice... cheers. That sounds like a good plan, I'm so bad at binning things off I have years of shit on there (have always copied things across machines for the last 5 years- since having to start again after having my laptop stolen and no backup).

Advice on backing up data? Such as iTunes library iPhoto etc?

  • Hard drive

  • Brilliant. Thanks...

  • Boot time on my mbp has increased dramatically in the last few days, I've not done anything to it in that time. I checked the disk in disk utility today and it says that I need to repair the disk, but I can't boot off a DVD as my optical drive is long dead.

    Any suggestions?

  • Crap- does that mean I'm going to have install mountain lion? I have been avoiding that.

  • what are you running now? there are instructions for 10.5 at the bottom but you
will need another mac with a dvd drive for that.

  • 10.6.8 at present.

  • If you have access to another mac you can use the cd drive on that, I had to do it once, but I forget how...

  • firewire and hold T ? then it behaves like an external hard drive.
don't think that works with newer macs though

  • So the big and shiny and stupidly expensive thunderbolt display. Who's got one, what are your thoughts?

I love my Thunderbolt, got it at staff discount price... I did buy a 27" Ultrasharp first but had to send it back because the anti-glare coating was so hideous...

    You won't be disappointed...

  • Decided I'm going for it, but need to build a study so I have somewhere to put it first :/

  • My iPhone 3GS finally died a week or two ago, and I went out and got a new contract with a 5c. Great. But I've just tried to connect it to the laptop, to try and restore it from a backup of the 3GS, and it won't link up with iTunes - says it needs 11.1. Problem is that 11.1 won't run on my MacBook, which is probably 6 years old and running Mac OS X 10.5.8.

What are my options? The latest OS won't run on my machine, will it? And it's pricey anyway. So am I now having to buy a new laptop to get tunes onto my phone? That kinda sucks.

In all honesty, all of my contacts and pictures are fine because they backup into the cloud, but I need to connect to the laptop to get music and videos.

  • Looking to sell my 27" iMac, does £685 seem like a fair price?

Specs are 3.2GHz i3, 8GB Ram, 500GB HD, ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB with mountain lion installed.

Was going to keep the keyboard and mouse as I'm switching to a macbook air and external monitor.

Also there is a small chip in the top right of the glass, just cosmetic.

With keyboard and mouse and no 'damage' they seem to go for about £800 on eBay

You need 10.6.8 to run the latest iTunes I think, which all MacBooks should be able to run, as long as it has a Core 2 Duo it should be able to run 10.7. as well. The only thing you'll have to make sure is you have enough RAM, 1GB for 10.6.8 or 2GB for 10.7

  • The lock screen button on my iPhone 4S has stopped working- anyone else on here had this issue and fixed it themselves? If so, how difficult was the operation, and what did you need?

  • If it's similar to replacing the screen, it's fiddly but do-able. Time and patience, look after screws, and get a kit with decent tools, and you should be fine. A good beer at hand helps.

  • dammit is your macbook performing well? WiFi/bluetooth?

I may have a buyer for you. PM coming.

  • My 85W charger has broken for my Macbook Pro 17". Now I do have apple-care, but my sister decided, without asking and without any electrical experience or knowledge to try and fix it herself.

Unfortunately she could not fix it and Apple will not replace it as it's been tampered with.

I've seen cheap/genuine versions of the adapter on eBay (£37) but, "is it safe"? I've heard I could damage the mother board with an incorrect AC Adapter.

Or do I bite the bullet on a £65 replacement?

  • I'd cover my arse and get an Apple one, heard some bad reports about the unofficial ones...

  • get an apple official one. Trust me.

Lock Screen button? Your power on/off or home button?
