  • They seem to be described as such.

  • love this blurb from the Giles Berthaud website:

You are now going to discover the different items we offer. As you will see, I like when things are well-done, clear and said in a straight way

This site is to be discovered with no limit.

I am sure that the bike 'buff' you are will enjoy
exploring the content of this site, as my
team and I have worked in this sense.
I hope you will enjoy this site and I
    wish you nice cycling tours.

  • I have a pair of Salmon Profil mudguards, never been out of their box:

Would anyone like these before I eBay them?

    £50 if you want them.

  • Berthoud

  • Anyone tried getting SKS Raceblade longs onto a track frame?

Used Crud MKII last year, worked but a bit of pain and eventually fell to bits. Here is the abomination..

  • Thinking about getting some of those wooden flat mudguards, or a metal equivalent
    something like these

and was wondering if they were any good in terms of keeping water off your legs, since they don't have the curved sides, otherwise I might go for some of the berthouds

but feel they are a bit too shiny and french postman bike..

any knowledge you'd like to share let me know..

  • Powdercoat the Berthouds.

  • Cause then they won't look French Postman bike-y?

  • I'm gonna go with a no on that one,
any insight into the flat wooden mudguards effectiveness?

  • and was wondering if they were any good in terms of keeping water off your legs, since they don't have the curved sides, otherwise I might go for some of the berthouds

They won't keep the water off your legs and component, even with skinny tyres.

Berthouds work very well, and probably the toughest mudguard you can buy for the money if quite fiddly.

but feel they are a bit too shiny and french postman bike..

Is your bicycle a post bike?

  • Call me crazy but I don't think it's the mudguards that are making it look like a post bike.

I would go for black SKS with GB fixings, or GB colour-coded to match the bike, or sprayed in a non-matching complementary colour like that porny burgundy nuvinci(?) with the green mudguards.

  • @cornelius
I have no complaints about Salmons Super Profils. They're flat, matte brushed not polished, great with skinny tyres, aren't totally flat underneath so do keep water in relatively well. Am about to remount mine onto my Mercian so I'll try to meet you in it some time soon if you like.

Otherwise what about hammered honjos/Velo Orange? Awesome looking, not postiebikey. Better than flat guards.

  • But the truly sensible option would be SKS. White ones are fresh!

@hugo why on earth would you use gb fixings on SKS? SKS fixings are perfect.

  • SKS fixing are massively heavy, which made the Berthoud ironically lighter than the SKS Chromoplastic.

  • 'ironically lighter' hah, I been scobled.

Yeah but the mudguards are lighter. So the benefit is negligible?

Don't really see how you'd use GB fixings on the SKS steel tabs on the mudguards, but I guess you'd remove the bits riveted on? Pics?

  • They look nicer. That's it for me.

You get the looks of GB with the weight advantage of high quality plastic 'gaurds.

  • The GB fixing not only are a lots lighter (alu instead of the SKS' steel) but fit a lots better without needing to readjusted it.

The SKS was around 550g, the GB was 450g.

  • The idea is stolen from someone on here... unfortunately I always forget who.

  • So did I.

  • So the conclusion is that flat guards are more show than go? Building a bike to be pretty and useable without assuming I'll be riding it through the heaviest downpour imaginable. I will take a punt on some flat mudguards and see how it goes through this autumn/winter. Hoping to run 28/32s but depends on the frame clearance..

  • It's withered preacher:

I'm the one with SKS fenders using Berthoud hardware.
Haven't weighed them, but they provide full coverage and are light enough, and look better without SKS hardware too. GB website does sell parts separately.

    ...now to find his images....

  • Flat guard work, but you'd get a lots of side spray due to as you correctly implied, the lack of curve on the sides.

Get some SKS Longboard instead, as they'll also not only cover the wheel nicely but stop your feet and drivetrain from getting dirty too.

  • Thanks for the mudguard thoughts Ed, but I'm not ready to go longboard just yet..
