  • Hey guys, I'm new to this site, but would love to join in next sunday, do i ned to sign up somewhere o just turn up? What time and where everyone is meeting?
    Cheers, m.

  • Over the weekend I'll edit the first post with that information.

This is a social/fun ride but there are very few bail points so check the route, check your legs, check your equipment. You must be a fit cyclist as we don't want to wait around(too much). Your bike should have decent tyres that aren't going to puncture in the middle of nowhere.

We will be starting early, it will be a long day.

130 bumpy, sometimes dusty, maybe muddy kilometers.

Haven't yet decided whether we will ride through Shoreham or South Downs at the end.

  • When we did it as a group, we were tired by the time we reached there... we went the River Adur route to Shoreham as that gave people a rest stop and newsagents where they could recover and breathe before doing the jubilant race down the coast road to Brighton.

  • Can I join at Byfleet .....Im doing a sportive the day before and will be knackered ...... and the track up to the hill behind Shoreham is murder...

  • You coming on the Gazelle?

  • Yep,just sorting out my head on changing the transmission to modern shimano, all the old stuff is worn out (bit like me I suppose)

  • What sort of gearing should I be aiming for with 35c cross tyres?

  • If I were attending it would be on about 65GI with 38c tyres.

I have to start work in Derby the next day at 7, which currently scuppers my plan of riding this and driving up the next morning.
/may still try and make it... but currently out.

  • Anyone got any thoughts on whether a rigid 29er (geared) with 2.1 tyres is going to be too sluggish? It's pretty light, but only done rides round Epping on it, so not sure of its long-distance suitability, and can only get 28s on the front of the pompino!

  • It's more about the engine...

  • I'll be riding my 26" geared hardtail MTB.

  • ^ eh? Surely this is ideal for a BMX or is Dimi going soft on us?

Trying to get ridiculously good riders to ride silly bikes to have half a chance of keeping up with them.

  • Interested in joining. Just want to know if single speed is fine or do I need my Alfine?

  • You can ride what ever bike you want but will only be going as fast as the guy in front, me.

I have ridden this a few times, always fixed.
Once at 44x17 (69) with narrow bars - not so fun.
Once at 30x13 (62) with 38+35c tyres and wide bars - ideal.
Once pulling a trailer cycle with a junior rouler on board.

It will be fine so long as you can sit down comfortably. So crank up the saddle height and you'll be good.

  • Just seen this! Looks ace.

  • i will be on a cyclocross with 35 tyres and 40cm bars. how technical is the terrain anyway?

  • Not very.

  • Actually, not at all.

  • There is that bend in the Thames quite early, and some gravel.

  • bend you say .... out

  • I should find out today if I can ride this.

  • Meeting Hammersmith Bridge at 09:00 Sunday - Leaving sharp - Be ready to ride!

Check your bike, body and brain before coming on this ride - will be a long day and we can't hang around.
