drip with sweat on arrival at college after my commute, even sometimes get an exertion headache if i get too excited en route.
I used to headaches from time to time, it was due to dehydration, how much water are you drinking?

i'm a LOT lower, at 49/19.
Agree (except I can't skid) with 48/17 is nice medium for getting going, top end and stopping without serious damage to knees.
Favourite gearing for sure. 18 too spinney and 16 around town is tough

Gone down to 44/16 on commuter. It's made me faster over the 11 miles there, and I've got far more energy all day than when I was on 49/17...

49:18 more skid patches than 48:18 and close to ideal

49/18, ratio of enlightened beings..

Been riding 48-18 for many years, but I just chucked a 15t on (courtesy of indra) for the track day. Tried it out on my super flat commute, quite nice. Really quite nice. Hmm.

Rode into work this am on 46/15, which I realised within 1/4 mile was waaay too high.
Arrived a sweaty mess.

I'm building my first fixed gear with 49 / 18 just need to learn how to skid
-

Currently on 48/17 but gonna try an 18 sprocket. A lot less skid patches though. I don't actually skid much, but the fact that my bike has many skid patches pleases me for some reason.

I'm on 42/16 at the moment, but there's a fairly long hill in my commute, and I'm spinning out on the way home, and it's not too bad climbing back up. Is it much of a jump going from a 16t to 15t? The extra skid patches are certainly enticing.

currently 48/17 but my knees are starting to ache constantly, so considering going to 46/17 as part of a hideously self-concious aesthetic upgrade.

Been on 52/19 and it feels pretty big but is a joy going downhill
knees aren't hurting fingers crossed
No brakes, all Faith

Hi, I'm currently planning on converting an old road bike to a fix gear bike, but I live by loads of hills so I'm worried that I won't be able to ride it anywhere! Can anyone suggest what sort of gear ratio I should be using?

67" or just read the thread for the pros and cons of ratios.
ftfy.
gear inches would be easier to decided a ratio base on the current chainring size.

How about a set up which provides a choice of ratios to suit the terrain? I hear the continentals have gone over to such a system almost completely, and even some English racers are now experimenting with it.

Tester, you're a maverick.

Moved up from 48/16 to 50/16 (front brake). It's ok for starting at lights or going uphill but fucking brilliant going back down or on a flat. 4 minutes faster on a 30 minute commute so at least i'm not slowing down.

Bye bye knees!

Bye bye knees!
That was my only concern but i've never had any problems, Then again i'll probably only find out when my joints get older...

Gear down man, that's nowhere near necessary on the road, honestly I run that at the track and 48x19 on the road.
48/17 is way too high for me now.
