There's nothing wrong with 50/16 on the road, if you know what you're getting yourself in for.
-
• #1855
Nope, there is mate.
Learning to spin is never a bad thing, hope dancing James doesn't mind being the example here but I rode with him whole he was on 48x19 for a around an hour, we averaged 20mph (hour of power) and he did it fine.
Look at the maths, why would you need or want 50/16 for commuting?

Sounds about right if you want to average 22mph :-)

I've averaged 23 on smaller gears, I reckon if I can others should be able to.

Elaborate, please.

As we all know 50/14 is the gearing of king (or the king).
I myself cant run sutch gears so go for 48/17 on the road (in hilly as fuck Auckland) and kind of miss my 19 tooth.
For the track and crit races I go for 48/14 otherwise you end up well under geared.

I'm not the fastest rider but i'm getting there.
I was riding with 46/18, but I "upgraded" to 46/17 last month. It rides a lot faster.
(I know, I know, pussy gears XD)

And Zak Carr did 28.09mph on 72", but that doesn't make it the optimum gear for him or anybody else.

I might be misinformed, but wasn't Zak's ride on SS (or virtual SS with a locked down rear mech), giving him the option of Hutch-style micro-coasting or whatever?

A 3:1 ratio can be quite good if the weather's alright, you want to cruise along in the low 20s on the flat, and power up any drags out of the saddle. I did the TNRC's hilly Kent 2 route on 45/15. It was fine, but I had no option but to treat things like Star Hill as a full-on assault, just to keep on top of the gear. In fact, you can see Tom B's time up there on Strava: I was about 10 seconds quicker that day. Not exactly 'everyday' riding.

48 X 19 on rat/commuter with 32c slick tyres
48 X 17 on track bike to use off track on 23c tyres
48 X 15 on track will go 48 X 14 or bigger soon on 23c tyres -

As we're auditing:
Folding commute SS - 69"
General purpose fixed (winter, night rides, centuries, blah) - 69.6"
Alternative road fixed (winter tempo short, summer tempo long) - 78.9"
Rollers - 78.9"Winter gears - 47/39, 14-25 9spd
Summer gears - 46/34, 12-23 10spd
I love them all. Like children, I couldn't and wouldn't pick a favourite.

Gear down man, that's nowhere near necessary on the road, honestly I run that at the track and 48x19
on theoff-road.Somehow :-/

65 gear inches is good for me, just low enough to get back up to speed after the lights
-
• #1868
Currently 48/17. I ran 44/14 for ages and i do miss the straightline warp speed, but im getting faster on a low ratio. Which is nice.

• #1869
Bought a bike that came with 46/15. Going for 48/19 now.

49/13. But, I live in the prairies of Canada. I'm not really sure what these "hills" people talk about are.

I read Husy as HoKe, kept banging on at him about 50/16 on the LBK ride. No wonder he just smiled and nodded!

on my commuter I ride with 52/18. Going to get an easier gear. It's way to heavy for me. Going to find a cheap 46 for front.
Going to buy a lower chainring for my racer for when I go to the French alps. I hope something lower then 44 on front and bringing multiple sets of cogs. 15 to 20.
I'm gonna redo my rear wheel, put on a flip flop hub (hopefully in a few weeks). Then I'll be running 48x16 ss and 48x19 fixed. Meanwhile I need to get my cadence up. Time for me to learn how to spin to win :) That sound better guys? haha
Would 48x19 give me 19 skid patches?
