  • Fair enough. Gimmick or not, winders are cool (#hipstertax ?) and will save you 60secs whenever you have to reset the dates on all your perpetual calendar watches ;)

    Le hehe/jokesinnitbruv I have a 17 jewel Seiko from 1971 that has only ever been serviced once, is rarely used, and keeps excellent time. Just by way of example I also have a 1964 Omega Constellation (565) that keeps great time and is rarely worn. Winders are gimmicks to extract monies from the unwary.

  • Seiko automatics let you change day and date very easily, Ed... Pull out crown to the position before you can move the hands, then go clockwise for date and anti-clockwise for day...

    Notice that too, at first it's like;

    But now;

  • so if one buys a watch in the US how much could one pay on top of the watch? things like import duties and taxes and courier costs?

    there some lovely watches for good prices but I know there are hidden costs but as an eBay newbie I'm curious.

  • if it's over £50 and labeled correctly. Expect to pay 20% plus handling fees which are usually about £20

    Do what a friend of mine does and ask nicely if the seller will mark it as a 'warranty return' (if a new watch - more effective than 'gift') and of a low value. Say around $40. Allegedly 9 out of 10 sellers don't have a problem and tax / handling fees can be circumnavigated.

    Are there any issues with the insurance value of the package if it is an expensive watch? i.e. mark the value low to dodge import taxes, but be unable to insure for an appropriate value?

  • as a test , a cost calculator I tried made GBP1000 into gbp4000 when I included insurance. for a new rrp of about gbp2000, that's ridiculous.

    why would insurance increase the total price?!?

  • You have to be really careful with insured items because ParcelFarce charge import duties on the total price inclusive of shipping costs! Got royally stung ordering some denim from Japan like that once, ended up paying something like £80 in fees for a £120 pair of jeans.

    It's a gamble but I, err my friend, insists on tracking so the likelihood of anything going missing is very slim. We're talking watches worth hundreds rather than thousands. Personally if I was going to spend thousands on a watch I'd buy within the EU and avoid extra tax that way.

  • I guess the watches we are interested in are European so it makes sense.

    Except there are a few deals from the US that make it tempting...

    Curse eBay!

  • Got my Tag Heuer back from repair.

    Found out it's a 1500 Series Professional 'Night Diver' model.

    Some history about the model range here:

    Few pics of my watch, looking a bit tidier now:

    It's not big or particularly fancy but I like it.

  • i like that, it's quite nice, liking the strap too.

  • Thanks. Strap is a Toshi . Tobacco brown leather with lime green stitching.

  • gotta start putting my prices up :)

  • That's a nice Tag, Gridds.

  • Does anyone know of anyone that will insure a (valuable) watch on its own policy? I still don't have home insurance in my shared house as we just havent got around to it, and I want to cover the watch for theft until we finally sort it.

  • Thanks rodabod!

    wear it :)

  • I wear it 24/7. I'd just be raaaaather upset if I were to get mugged or something similar. Not saying that happen, but just for precautionary measures.

  • How often did you get mugged?

  • I've been mugged twice before. I can't comprehend why you seem to be miffed by the fact that I want to insure a valuable watch...

  • Wear a Casio on your other wrist, and offer it up when you next get mugged.

  • Have no idea which watch you're referring to, was it those thousand quid kind of watch?

  • Yes.
