Would go again, and probably will as my grandparents live up that way.
I was hoping to ride through a mile-long tunnel in the dark, but it turned out to be too dark and full of pot holes. And shit scary.

Just to be clear, not the same route.

..
There are plenty of sections around Guildford that are complete mud-pits in the winter (ie now). In the summer they'll be muddy (if it has rained recently) or compacted, rock hard, very bumpy mud at best. ..
If there has been any hint of rain in the preceding days we are going to miss that section along the river bank just after Guildford in favour of the adjacent tracks and road.

Where was this?
Hah, so I checked and it was a quarter of a mile. Felt longer, though.
Brampton Valley Way, part of NCR 6. Oxenden tunnels are close to Market Harborough. Would be great if they could smooth the surface inside, like the one that's soon to open near Bath.
Really nice ride on a sunny afternoon, though.

if you are heading over the downs link it is advisable to join it at wonnersh as the part from st marthas hill to wonnersh is going to be impossible fixed as i struggled massively on a tourer and the sand at the top of the hill by the church is deep deep deep. The rest of the route is easily navigable a fact t which I can attest as I have ridden the downs link multiple times. I agree the thames path ish area will be slow going.
The alternative option is route 21 from greenwich, mostly traffic free but you will probably have similar navigation errors as with anything sustrans if anyone has experience with their routes they can be patchy in places. A recce is advised.

This goes past the end of the road I grew up on, I spent many happy hours cycling the towpaths of the Thames, Wey and Basingstoke canal. I'll probably meet you all at New Haw Lock on the Wey Navigation.
Jake's right, if it's sunny the Thames/Wey towpaths will be full of families, dogs off the lead, fishing poles across the towpath etc so these sections could be slow going.

how long is that section?
-
• #46
Is why we are starting early..
-
• #47
I rode this route today - it was fine but bumpy - we are leaving early to avoid walkers on the 1st leg - the paths are broad and empty on the 2nd leg
Please refer to the OP if you are thinking of coming. The salient point is in BOLD
Might be a long day in the saddle - Quick but social pace - No crybabies

In preparation I've just changed my bar wrap from cork to cotton. I'll be the one with bathroom sponges tied to his hands.
