I don't eat pork crackling, whilst this doesn't make me a 'good person' like all you lot, I can swap pork crackling for bikes, no questions asked.

^ Why did he even do that? Looks of that lock, he could have just pulled hard on the bike and whole thing would have come away, he could have ridden home on both wheels.

I'm going to have to shame myself in here.
I completely forgot to bring my lock to work and had to leave my bike outside unlocked for half an hour until my colleague came and locked it to his bike for me.

bike shop assistants selling them the cables & assuring them they're fit for purpose.

I had a chat with the manager at work about that^. He said just tell them that they're ok, because telling someone that they need two d-locks at all times to lock their bike means they will be put off and not buy the locks at all. That and one of the best value locks comes with a 'free' cable. (Krypto evo mini). Logic seemed iffy, so I still recommend double d-locks.

Secret, innit.
But the guy has been selling for literally decades and said not to bother, as people just don't use them properly (2731 is a case in point). So may as well spend their money on something that will be used to its full capacity.I still stand by telling people how to lock up when they buy them.
I did however have one guy nod all the way through my explanation, and buy the discussed locks (fahg and a krypto mini)... he came in for some gels three days later, and left his bike unlocked on the street asking the receptionist to 'keep an eye out for dodgy characters'. She asked and he DID have a lock on him... Fucking beggars belief really.

I know of one branch of a bikeshop chain in London whose layout dictates they need separate "reception" and sales desks.
