  • Yeah I get you. Sometimes the best advice will fall on deaf ears, or people just don't want to hear it and turn away. Might as well have them spend money with you anyway if they're going to be so careless..

  • ^^It's not a hard one really.

Be sure to look at the second picture.

  • ^that's hilarious when you read the description afterwards.

  • wtf haha

  • bike shop assistants selling them the cables & assuring them they're fit for purpose.

I had a chat with the manager at work about that^. He said just tell them that they're ok, because telling someone that they need two d-locks at all times to lock their bike means they will be put off and not buy the locks at all. That and one of the best value locks comes with a 'free' cable. (Krypto evo mini). Logic seemed iffy, so I still recommend double d-locks.

Balls to that. I tell people that it's two d-locks or one d-lock and a Pitlock or they're buying at their own risk. Ever since someone who had a cable lock cut through came back and said it had been recommended by a colleague. I'm not sure I believe them, they were probably just trying to cut corners, but I'd rather lose a sale than sell something that will get someone's bike pinched.

Worst comes to worst just tell them to price match it, they'll normally get the locks half price anyway and can then buy two.

  • Like I said. I still say double Ds.

  • Fnar.

  • Narf.

  • Could snap that with my little finger. Don't even need pliers.

  • also doesn't even go through the frame...

  • Given that you could snap it just by lifting up the front wheel and pushing a little, doesn't really signify. You get to keep the rear wheel that way.

  • Not sure who this belongs to, but I found this outside my workplace this morning. Stem had been unbolted and the complete front end has gone.

  • ^ Ouch :(

I was so glad I locked my front wheel to my frame when this happened on Saturday, otherwise I could have been looking at a much bigger loss:

It also made me realise that front wheel to frame is a must; front wheel to stand and they can still get the forks. (I'm aware the best would be front wheel, frame and stand but that's not possible with those tyres.)

  • Is that a 29er? I run that, 29er with Twin Rails. I love those tyres - feels like there is nothing to stop me on my commute, just roll right over everything - kerbs, cars, buses, peds, small animals...anything. SS too, such a boss commuter.

  • ^^ I don't get it. Why does front wheel to frame prevent the forks from being nicked? Is it because you can't rotate the forks down through the head tube?

  • Think I answered my own question there.

Another one: how do you stop your stem being unbolted and nicked like ^^

  • By putting ball bearing on the top cap, or get those Pinhead top cap.

  • Yep, it's a 29er and its so much fun. I'd love to try them with freewheel and brakes sometime.

I usually glue ball bearings into the Allen holes, but those forks are different and it wasn't possible so they just used a 6mm key and made off with £130 worth of parts. It was a lovely start to my weekend.

  • ^ Superglue ball bearing in the allen bolt.

This prevented my wife's Brooks getting nicked in Shoreditch the other day, cunt cut the cable lock I had put through the rails but he was completely baffled why he couldn't remove the seatpost (she walked up and caught him in the act of trying to remove it).

  • Been mentioned elsewhere that ball bearing in a bit of sticky grease is good enough. That way, you can use a magnet to remove them when you need, but most thieves would not carry a magnet. Superglue means you can never remove the part.

^^ Ah fixed, of course, no brakes. Yeah, I have SS and hydraulic discs front and rear - stops on the spot with one finger. Very useful when peds step out etc.

  • ^ cant a bearing ball just be poked out of the grease with a door key or a simple pen though?

  • That way, you can use a magnet to remove them when you need, but most thieves would not carry a magnet.

Surely you could just flick it out with a pin or something?

Superglue means you can never remove the part.

    Nail polish remover, ten minutes.

  • ^^ and ^ good points. I have never met a bike thief who carries nail polish remover...

  • This Shoreditch Brooks thing is a joke. I swear that if plod set up a grab bike and nicked that guy they'd halve brooks thefts in east London.
