double chainring and a dos freewheel isn't it.

2 Chainrings, 2 rear Cogs, so 4 speeds.

Whats a good chain and freewheel for 1/8" cross/bad weather commuting?
-
• #780
510HX innit'?
-
• #781
Okay, thanks. Thats already my chain of choice for my normal commuter, but I've never used it in mud or heavy rain

Is it? where?
-
• #784
Is it a dos freewheel or just a road hub with 2 cogs? They're 130 spaced right?
-
• #785
Yeah, after looking properly it looks to be a road hub. No reason you couldn't run a Dos freewheel though; plenty of track hubs with 130mm axles around. I'm running Goldtecs on my Nature Boy.

show me the mechs - until then it is a ss, and these parts are just spares carried on the bike.

I think it is 2 speed... or that's what I have seen before. You keep a straight chainline by running it on the outside front and rear, or inside front and rear. Why? Well rather than running 40 with 16 and 18 on the back, say, with an 11% difference between the two, you can run 42 and 16 on the outside, 40 and 18 on the inside, giving a 15% difference.... and a straight chainline the whole time, and... the extra bonus, is you wouldn't need to move the wheel forwards and back... the required chain length would hardly change.

• #788
the thing is that if you have to get off the bike and move the chain over by hand, I think it is in effect a single speed bike.
-
• #789
That's right, agreed. Just saying, the intention is to use two gears methinks.....well maybe four, but y'know, there is always the idea you get two nice ones with straight chainline the whole time.
I'm doing one myself, with 42 front, a 16/18 freewheel on one side of a flip flop and a 20 or more on the other side of the flip flop. Got myself a couple of gears for roads and tracks. And flip it over to the 20+ for off road. Running 700x30.
Comments welcome.

If you're not using a tensioner. You'll have to have the wheel slammed forward for the 20t for this to work. My guess is you need 2/3 inch of rear wheel movement to get this to work well. So it is doable.
42:20 sounds like a nice offroad CX gear.

Been thinking about 42/40 x 17/19 for my mielec (ss)cx.
One gear for riding on asphalt/gravel and one for the woods

It's a pomp, got pretty long track ends, more than 2/3 inch anyway. So I think so.

Yeah, similar. 17 and 19, what is that, sprockets on a freehub, or a double freewheel? I'm guessing the former as the only double freewheels I came across are 16/17 (from ACS) and 16/18 from somewhere for $100, too rich for me although I would prefer it.

yeah that 100ish euros for a white ind. freewheel is pretty painful. But I'd say it adds so much functionality to the bike it is justified. A bit cheaper probably would be to get road/cx wheelset with cassette freehub, but I already have a set of open pros laced to miches without a bike to put them into

42:20 is slightly higher than standard offroad singlespeed gearing.
700x35mm tyres, and 42:20 = 57GI.
26"x 2,2" tyres, and 32:16 = 53GI.But it does sound nice for a faster, less technical CX ride.
-
• #796
41:21 is the one I ride the most.
-
• #797
My SS has 51GI. Currently commuting on it, and its too fecking spinny a road gear, even for the snow covered roads. Works nice off-road.

Mmmm, have not bought the 20 yet, so could go to 42/21, which with my 700x30 would give me 53.8". Bang on the standard offroad SS gearing as Smallfurry quotes it.

1 skiddpatch if fixed

SS, although I could aim to apply the brakes at the same point of wheel rotation every time.
it's a variable speed bike. the speed changes according to how fast you pedal?
or maybe he means that as it's standing still in the photo it's a no speed bike?
