If people would just wrap their bars properly, leaving a little overlap at the end, then bar plugs wouldn't fall out and these accidents could be avoided.

Slightly different but related, chain whip with full weight on it slips as cog loosens, top of thumbnail slams directly onto spoke, surprised I haven't torn it off. It looks small bruise yet is quite painful.
V.effective torture method I'd reckon, wedging stuff under fingernails...

Pull tools, don't push them.
Crushing fingers isn't fun; ramming the inside of your wrist onto sharp components is a whole different problem.

^ Needed weight / longer lever in this case. I stupidly chose weight over pausing and reaching for the lever.

Then you just punch yourself when it lets go.
Us experts fit the whip and then randomly kick towards the bike in a hysterical rage until the part we are trying to loosen actually lets go.

Oh yeah, always use the correct tool. I've learned from older wiser people than me that 90% of a job is getting the correct tool and setting it up properly. Every time I've fucked up a job it's because I ignored this advice.

I always use the extension pipe from my Hoover to add leverage to a chain whip.
Is that the right tool?

^^^ sounds like a good tool for leverage, I usually use an old Brompton seatpost.

Pull tools, don't push them.
I crushed something (cartilage?) in my chest last summer when pulling at a stubborn pedal spanner with both hands as hard as I possibly could whilst bracing my chest against the saddle. I was mid full-on red faced eye bulging strain and something just went crrrrrrunch in my ribs. Was totally winded and couldn't move comfortably for about two months afterwards. Neato. Was at Souths at the time and had to style it out and ride off like it was no big deal. In the absence of a proper pedal spanner I'm now much quicker to resort to the "hit-spanner with hammer" maneuver. I have never chopped a bit of myself off though. Looks grim.

i shaved off quite a bit of skin once whilst doing this and landed on a couple bladed spokes

Christ that sounds bloody awful. I had something like that happen to me years ago when a friend stood on my chest. It was bloody painful for a few months afterwards and even a year later I could feel it 'ticking' if I rolled over in bed.

Oooh fuck. Yeah, it's basically, one fingertip got sliced off, other one has bone damage. Nerve damage to my index finger and chunk of bone taken out of the middle finger, that's after two weeks of them being sewn together.

I fell out of a tree into the Bass River yesterday. Then I got stuck in a wombat burrow and had to be dragged out by my ankles.
True story.

I know quite a few fixie riders and mechanics who've done this, you're not the only one and you'll be fine as long as you keep it clean
'of'? :-)
