Thanks for the link colm. I found these FIR which fit the bill:
http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/fir-mizar-aero-road-tubular-700c-id25253.htmlmdcc - thought I would build up some tubulars because I have yet to lace some tubs up - just box ticking I guess!

Well, build some clincher track training wheels and then get your box ticked by buying my 24h CX18s and building some old school race wheels. That's some proper wheel building; 320g 18mm wide rims, see if you can get them straight and evenly tensioned with only 24 spokes :-)

I think the 24h build is a little bit further down the list.... I'll let you know when I get there.

mdcc (or anyone else with good knowledge)
yesterday whilst riding to work a spoke snapped on my rear wheel, this caused the wheel to massively distort. Now i've had spokes snap before and the wheel has always gone out of true but never enormously.
So what would cause that?
For reference the wheel is an MA2 with a Mavic 500RD Freewheel hub, running a 7sp freewheel.
also, I had the wheel rebuilt about 2 years ago, by a now out of business bike shop. Thanks for any help!

Could be that your spoke tensions were very uneven in the first place?
-
• #632
yes, I thought about that.
The wheel was fairly true, so if the spoke tensions were uneven yet the wheel was true does that mean that the rim is significantly bent? or does it just mean that the wheel was badly built? -
• #633
uneven spoke tension + true wheel is usually down to the rim not being very round in the first place, or perhaps it was bent and the spokes were overcompensating.
Its very hard to diagnose these things though without seeing the wheel. If the rim isn't plastically deformed, I would just replace the spoke and give the wheel a full retruing.

thanks Hovis,
I don't suppose you fancy doing that in exchange for some cold hard cash?
-
• #635
A drive-side spoke going would probably put the wheel out of true more than a NDS spoke, or a spoke on the front wheel. Unlikely that the rim is/was bent unless it was a heavy impact that precipitated the spoke breaking.

Yes I could do, although I'm going on holiday on sunday. Will PM you

^ Weird. I had that happen today, but it was a NDS spoke. Probably doesn't help that it was on a wheel that hadn't seen a spoke key for decades.

If so can anyone please confirm spoke length for suzue pro max large flange front hub on open pro rim
I think it's 289 but am second guessing when about to go and order - no way to check at the mo...
(will write things down in future)
For reference 289 was correct.

How many spokes, what pattern?

• #640
oh yeah, 36h 3 cross

what spoke length do i get? 285mm or 286mm
-
• #642
You cant link a file from your pc, as we dont all have your file structure and contents, Mr Elliot.
-
• #643
If we could read your local file system from here, we might be able to help.
Assuming you have attemted to show us a screen grab of a spoke calculation yielding a result between 285 and 286, get the shorter spoke, as explained here many times.

just about to pull the trigger on some components to build some wheels, i was thinking of going with mavic a119 rims, but im a little concerned that the minimum recommended tyre width is 28mm. Will I encounter any problems if I run 25s?

No, you can even run 23c tyres on A119s.

• #647
excellent, thanks yet again.

whats the maximum acceptable length differentiation with spokes? i have some spokes which are 4mm longer than the calculator tells me i need. is it worth trying to build it up and seeing what happens? or is that way too long?
ta
-
• #649
4mm definitely no. I tried a 2mm too long spoke to replace a broken spoke and it bottomed out way before enough tension.
-
• #650
as expected. bugger!
Why tubulars? Clinchers are fine for training, and there are loads of cheap OTP wheels, notably from Varno. Just pick the right tyres, i.e. ones which are actually rubber rather than 90% SiO2 filler.
