  • Cupcakes where do you reside? When yours is done could i test?

  • I'm in Deptford, but the frame's in Leicestershire just now. I'll be bringing the frame down to London in a fortnight but I need to sort out headtube and BB shell facing, headset fitting and fork cutting. I'm aiming to get it built by the end of the month though, so if it's done in time and you're patient enough, then sure... I could bring it to SE beers if you like.

  • Awesome, i think ill be buying frame last.. (easier to hide bits than bikes ;] ;])

  • Got to be honest Trailerman, I think you'll want a large or you might wind up with a fuckload of stem stackers. I'm 5'10" and I'm on a large with 30mm of spacers.

Depends on proportions though.. I'm 5'11" and ride a medium. I'd like it to be a bit taller of course but a large would be too long for me

I don't mind a few spacers if necessary, but would like to avoid that kind of s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d effect you get when you add a huge stem, set-back post and then slide the saddle right back. Geometry seems to suggest I'll be (just about) ok, based on my current riding position, but I guess you don't really know until you sit on it for the first time, by which time you're fucked if it's wrong!

  • There are many way to make the bike look less stretched out, i.e. handlebar with a longer reach (95-125mm) instead of a compact drop reach (75-85mm)

  • This is making me worry. I'm 5'10, 54 or 55 in most road frames and I just ordered a medium Pompetamine, being delivered today ...

I am 5'11 and ride a 54 with a 100mm stem and 8" of seat post, you will be fine

  • carbon fork at least.
I'm turning mine into a sort of pimpetamine with some campagnolo, 3t and some shiny stuff.

for sure for damping. Oh and light but stable wheel set helps keep the weight down.

  • Agree that sizing depends on your proportions but I think the short head tube on the pomp, especially the medium, throws out the effective top tube length. I reckon it'd be easy to end up with a stack of spacers and then find you need a more stretched out position to compensate for the shorter effective tt, if that makes any sense?

  • Really? your Merican is like 55-56cm TT is it/

My Mercian is 55cm TT, but 58cm ST

It doesn't look like it but the contact points on these two are in exactly the same place, using the BB as the origin. Bike whisperer fit on the Mercian, super scientific lean the pompino up against the mercian fit on the pompino.

  • What forks on yours upstart

  • Upstart, your Pompino is actually a Large, not a Medium.

With it's 73.5 degrees ST, your Pompino is realistically a 55cm TT.

  • ^^^Slack chain.

    Nature boy

That'd probably explain why it fits like my Mercian then! I bought it second hand but the guy told me it was a medium.

  • I supposed that it fit like a typical medium rather than it's being one (L and XL model have pump pegs on the headtube).

    stroke of luck eh?

  • Lovin both those bikes upstart. Definitely a large, same as mine.

  • new front end on mine today.
Dartmoor vee-two hub, DT R520, BB7, Salsa La Cruz fork.
Next job is to construct a decent mud flap for the front guard.

  • ^ is that an early pomp with 135 rear spacing?

  • I feel I need to shout here, SMALL POMPS ARE FOR TINY PEOPLE!

I'm 175cm with 31' inseem and normal length arms and feel very very upright on my medium pomp that I use for polo. I have a large one for commuting with an inline seatpost and 100mm stem and still feel like I'd be ok moving the saddle back or using a layback seatpost.

This is my medium (52cm cus its old) pomp set up for polo which puts me in a MUCH more upright position than what I'd use for commuting or cyclocross. Its a super short stem in the pic but even with my newer 80mm one I still feel quite upright. The saddle can't go back any further.

I think the size chart on the on-one website is pretty off. Their recommended max height for the 51cm medium is 178cm, there's no way I'd be comfortable riding on the road on one no matter what the setup!

  • ^ is that an early pomp with 135 rear spacing?

    nah, its a 120mm.

  • This sizing chat sounds very silly to me.

My small pomp has a 52.5 effective top tube. 52.5 is the length of top tube that I was recommended following my bikefit. Scherrit>>>internet advice.

Obviously everyone is different and the proof of the pudding may be in the eating, but all this speculation, guessing sizes from photos, saying people definitely will or won't need a certain size -- it strikes me as a load of rubbish.

  • ^ready to eat my words when the build is finished, of course.

  • This evening, after a bit of spreadsheet pushing, I'm pretty much decided on going Pompetamine over Pompino to replace my 10SCX with SSCX. After reading around, I've found that 29er and 700c rims are interchangeable so long as you don't use skinny road tyres on the 29er rim. Can anyone confirm that Challenge Griffos would be fine on these wheels?

  • you'll be fine

  • You can use road tyres on 29ers rims, the difference is the width.

I have 25c on the ZTR Crest which is the smallest I can go with it.

  • the only problems seem to be

some 29er rims are made to accept tubeless tyres wich may mean they have a deeper hook and a taller edge. this might make it difficult to get a road tyre on and off.

29er rims are not designed for the high pressure you need in a low volume road tyre. I have never heard of anyone having a rim explode from this tho.
