  • Build wheels for a living?

  • Takes a lot of practice to make money from building wheels, even getting stuff at trade prices.

  • Break bad jokes for a living?

  • ^^^^ I can't believe that's true. It takes me at least 3 hours to build a wheel.

I ordered a Tiagra/Sputnik wheel from Parker International today for about a fiver more than it would cost me in parts.

    #lazy

  • I'll probably have to spend an hour sorting it out when it arrives.

    :-)

  • ^^^^ I can't believe that's true. It takes me at least 3 hours to build a wheel.

It doesn't take me that long, and it happens at a time of day when I'd be losing money if I went out and did my day job.

  • Break bad jokes for a living?

I'm good at it so I might as well get paid for it.

  • Been looking at budget wheel builds from just riding along. Seems I could have a salsa rim (good for cross) wheel build for around £130.

  • I can't see that on their site, Salsa Delgado X rims are £40 each so what hubs and spokes do you get for only £50?

  • Ah maybe I was wrong and that was just one wheel.

    In which case >>>>>

  • Looking at the WTB rims you've mentioned. Thinking of buying the parts and taking them to the lbs and seeing if they'd build them up for me.

  • They will likely to charge more if you bring your own spokes than using their.

  • Rogan i haz a small pompino i use for polo. It'd be too small for me for everyday use(I'm 5ft7 wi 28inside leg) Spd's are a must to reduce the risk of your feet getting knocked off your pedals when turning. Super skinny front tyre helps a lot too. I've also a large pomp( miss advertised as a med) which I use for commuting and find just right. If you get the chance try the medium before you part with any money.

  • same size as me Dtroll, i have a slightly bigger inside beg but small arms, so ill try out JB's next week

  • This is making me worry. I'm 5'10, 54 or 55 in most road frames and I just ordered a medium Pompetamine, being delivered today ...

  • That'll be fine, better slightly smaller than slightly bigger.

  • And you could die. Think about it. Will you have lived your life to the fullest? Not if you spent it at home building wheels like a nerd.

building and riding my own wheels are one of the things I really wouldn't leave without having experienced.

  • That'll be fine, better slightly smaller than slightly bigger.

Thanks Ed - hope you're right. I've never been a fan of the 'massive stem/set-back seatpost' look.

  • The pomp have a fairly normal seat tube angle than most frame (which tend to be 74 degrees) so I doubt you'd need to set the saddle far back*

    *unless it's a classic/old saddle.

  • Got to be honest Trailerman, I think you'll want a large or you might wind up with a fuckload of stem stackers. I'm 5'10" and I'm on a large with 30mm of spacers.

  • Basic wheel building really isn't that hard.

Track rear's are the same are fronts. The spoke lengths are the same both sides, even tension, no dishing, it really isn't that hard. 32 spokes is plenty strong enough (and forgiveable enough) for even a ropey build.

You can use the frame as a truing stand. I think blue-tacking a 15cm ruler to the stays/forks is the best way. It gives both left/right and roundness.

I ordered a Tiagra/Sputnik wheel from Parker International today for about a fiver more than it would cost me in parts.

That maybe true but it does depend and building your own gives you free reign.

My first wheelset came in at around £74 using second hand but vgc Ritchy rims (from 'tester), one one hubs, and DB ACI's. Recently my Mavic A319 / 105 came in at about £115 which I'm not sure I could have bought for the same price. Although you can get them with Tigra hubs for £105. So maybe I'm talking out of my arse.

  • Depends on proportions though.. I'm 5'11" and ride a medium. I'd like it to be a bit taller of course but a large would be too long for me

  • Really? your Merican is like 55-56cm TT is it/

  • Mine is a 'small'; I'm 5'7" but I need the 52.5 effective top tube.

When I ride bikes with 54 tt (as the medium pomp has) I end up with a 60-70mm stem, which I'm trying to avoid with this build.

I'll probably end up with a massive spacer stack, but I couldn't care less.

  • Cupcakes, the Canyon roadlite* sound like a decent fit as it got a 52cm TT and a 150mm headtube**, which is a similar length to a normal 56cm bicycle.

*obviously very different to the Pomp.

**also got a normal seat angle which is pretty rare in small frame.
