This evening, after a bit of spreadsheet pushing, I'm pretty much decided on going Pompetamine over Pompino to replace my 10SCX with SSCX. After reading around, I've found that 29er and 700c rims are interchangeable so long as you don't use skinny road tyres on the 29er rim. Can anyone confirm that Challenge Griffos would be fine on these wheels?
I've been running Challenge Limus on Halo areowarriors and they are a perfect fit. As far as I know the tyres are exactly the same size, just with different tread and the rims are within a mm of the ones you're looking at, in terms of dimensions.

the only problems seem to be
some 29er rims are made to accept tubeless tyres wich may mean they have a deeper hook and a taller edge. this might make it difficult to get a road tyre on and off.Quite right, I found a solution by pushing the bead into the middle of the rims as that's where it's deeper making it easier to take it on and off without resorting to a car tyres lever.
29er rims are not designed for the high pressure you need in a low volume road tyre. I have never heard of anyone having a rim explode from this tho.
Neither have I, the advantage of the wider rims is running the tyres at a lower pressure than intended, I have 80psi on the rear and 65psi on the front with 25c tyres on the ZTR Crest.
Personally, I think 28c is the perfect size for performance and comfort on moderate road surface.

I'm going to see how low I can go with 27c parigi-roubaix on ztr arch.
I almost bought some 355grams frm rims, but chickened out due to the 50psi max pressure label.I think 33c will be no problem especially with pressure suited for mud cross racing

the Challenge tyres? beware, they feel like they're constantly low on pressure, even when overinflated.
Grippy thought.

Oh yes, hope this help, NoTube said you can run road tyres at it's recommended psi no problem;

(thought I'd advised a touch lower than recommended).

Aren't you more likely to suffer from pinch punctures with under inflated tyres on oversized rims?

Also, more squirm.

Less than you would with narrow rims, due to the way the sidewall folds

Again, less than with narrow rims

How can you get pinch punctures when the rims is wider? the tyres doesn't squrim when it sat on a wider rims due to the tyres on an U shape profile rather than a bulb profile.
The only problem I can think of with wide rims + skinny tyres is the increase risk of damaging the rims when hit a pothole at too high a speed.

Isn't that just the standard method or removing tyres?

Totally agree

Mine feel fine.

Yep, but with tubeless it's absolutely necessary to do so.
Mine feel fine.
In that case would you like to buy my pairs? I can't get on with them as well as I did with my Grand Bois.

Finally got 32s on the Pomp. Loving life. Can still go as fast as I was before on my commute, I think, and not that much harder to do so either.

you just got a front brake jake? or both?
-
• #1591
errr none at the moment. Tried to fit mini v last night but it wasn't working. Will just be front though.

The biggest problem with wide rims + skinny tyres is the increase risk of damaging the rims when hit a pothole at too high a speed.
I Think I'll Continue using tyres within the range of widths recommended by the rim manufacturer. And keep them pumped up to the max pressure recommended by the tyre manufacturer. I know it's not very adventurous but since doing this I've never had a pinch puncture and never experienced tyre squirm!!
-
• #1593
The max pressure is exactly as it implied, not the recommended pressure which depend on your tyres size + body weight.
It's best to run the tyres at an ideal pressure that absorb the road vibration well and perform perfectly, having them pumped up to the max actually **increased **the rolling resistant.
edit first post as saying "biggest" seemed to implied it's a very common problem, only experience this once with 23mm tyres on Mavic A319 (25mm wide) after hitting a very big pothole causing a tiny chip on the braking surface (but no puncture).

Why bother correctly inflating your tyres when you can always buy a titanium or carbon sportive frame with curvy seatstays to iron out the bumps.
-
• #1595
And if it's still uncomfy even with Assos on your butt it's time to buy a Colnago.
-
• #1596
And if that's not comfortable, you know what to do, time to get 'bent.

Doesn't stop pinch flats though.
Totally agree that max pressure is just that though. As Ed said, you want to have them at the optimum pressure for your weight.

Wut? Overinflate your tyres and pinches aren't going to be an issue.
It'll ride like crap and not grip properly. Pumping your tyres to the max and spending out on a posh frame to try and compensate is ridiculous – clearly I was going for the Scoble/Dtroll double-troll.
Tyre pressure is dull, but really fucking important!

Sorry, I totally misread what you were trying to say but agree, tyre pressure has to be right.

Just been havin a browse for some carbon forks for my Pompetamine and there seems to be sod all in the way of carbon disc forks round the 395 a-c mark. Since the UCI have allowed discs in cyclocross, I thought all the manufacturers would be all over this. Looking at these although they seem to be designed more for trekking. Anyone ridden them?
grifos on the wheels you posted will be just fine I think.
