Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins is in hospital after a crash on a Lancashire road.

The 32-year-old, who also scooped gold in the time trial at this summer’s Olympic Games in London, was involved in a collision with a van in Wrightington, close to his home in Eccleston, near Chorley.

It is believed he may have broken several ribs and suffered hand and wrist injuries although police have refused to give any details as to whether any wounds could threaten his world-beating cycling career.

  • Cycle safety may be about to get real.

Jesus. Maybe things will change for cyclists now?
    Heal up hero.

  • Manchester Evening News reports driver of van was not injured. Whoop de doo.

  • Cycle safety may be about to get real.

Is this what it has to take?
If the road "accident" quota of this country was considered as seriously as other issues perhaps riding a bike wouldn't feel like a daily endurance activity.
Get well soon modfather, nice work on the 13 women's team as well.

  • Heal up soon, Wiggo.

  • I'm guessing 4 separate threads about this by the morning.

The problem is that I think hippy is merging them, but this being the Rider Down forum has fairly strict rules about being respectful to those involved in road incidents.

  • Heal up Wiggo!

  • Have posts just disappeared?

  • Have posts just disappeared?

yep, i think the slightly jocular ones got removed.

  • (Does this happen in other threads? I didn't think Testers' was that wrong.)

Goes without saying I really hope this leads to strong change.

  • Htfu bw.

  • Heal up rider.

  • Heal up fast wiggo.

This paragraph from the MEN article makes me worry though

"A police source said his injuries from the crash were thought to be very serious at first, but later it appeared he suffered a number of broken ribs and cuts and bruises"

Serious at first? A number of broken ribs isn't serious now? W.T.F.

  • They drive like knobs round there, all back roads n narrow, I used to go those ways on the 600 to rivvy barn (before I sold it) not exactly bike friendly roads

As for him being out at 6, aren't most commuters, probs heading home for tea

The good thing is the hospital there is higly rated, although they don't do anything for ribs nowadays

Good to hear it wasn't a really serious/fatal accident, might make popo sort a few of the idiots on the road out now with it being such a high profile accident

  • Get well soon wiggo!

    Any info on the driver?

  • White Van Man runs over my hero. I am fucking spitting feathers. I am going to have some attitude on today. Not a smiling buddha.

  • Have posts just disappeared?

    Yes.

This thread is in the Rider Down forum. Whilst this specific incident involves someone famous, the Rider Down forum has an established tone of respect and no speculation on blame. The posts which engaged in disrespect, jokes, and speculation have been removed. This is true of all threads within this one forum even though the temptation to crack a joke is high in this case and thankfully Wiggins is going to be fine.

  • Get well soon wiggo!

    Any info on the driver?
What's the insurance claim for damaging a sportsman worth > £3m per year?

  • Cycle safety may be about to get real.
Yes,compulsory helmets, compulsory dayglo and maybe compulsory steel safety cage around cyclist;easier than making drivers calm down and drive properly

  • Good analysis from CTC

  • Wiggo's crash was only about 10 miles from http://www.lfgss.com/thread96294.html

  • initially BBC radio was reporting it as wiggo colliding with the van, it's never the other way round is it…
