and you still had the bike stolen?

So, a £30 fine but 1 bike back. If I hadn't been stopped I definitely wouldn't have seen it.. : )
Nice one mate!
I assume that as you reported the theft to Lewisham police you've got a case detective by now? Be sure to ring/email them and tell them about this incident...

PC Harry of the 'Park seems to have taken control of this.. He called me today with an update. The guy they took off to the station last night has a bit of previous for handling stolen goods so it's not looking too rosy for him. I was surprised to learn that the penalties for receiving/handling stolen goods are more severe than those for stealing them in first place. To deter the market for stolen stuff apparently...
Anyway he must have given them a bit more info about where/who he got it from as PC Harry is going to follow something up tonight. I have to go give a statement on Monday.
I asked about when I'd get the bike back and he told me that it had to be 'forensicated' first. It's my new favourite word.

Last year I witness a shocking (but efficient) bike theft in broad day light on tooley street. A "gang" of teenagers maybe 10 or so, all on bikes, with some 2 by bikes. They suddenly stopped in front of london bridge station where there are bikes parked, circled the bikes, cut one of the chain, get on the bike and disappeared. This has taken less than 10 seconds ! Lots of people watched but no one did anything (why they should ? not worth to get stabbed for a bike). Watch out for those teenagers on bikes !

Several reports (anecdotally) of an increase in bike theft from the London Bridge/Bermondsey area in the last few weeks: "Secure" metal bike sheds opened up and the (locked) bikes removed leaving no trace of the bikes or locks - this on Grange Road

Damn that's my old manor. Would have thought it was safe from entire bike theft. What time was it stolen and was it locked (don't care how) ?
yeah, i know. it was probably soon after dark - it was d locked thru the wheels - the lock in the picture. - it was an old lock, Citadel it was called, 20 years old i'd say. It had been known to jam half on - if that's what happened someone could have just knocked it off. There's the lesson people!

Thanks mate, As do I. I have my own shop almost over the road too. The Police know who it is as I found it on Ebay, they went knocking for him but couldn't find him or it and the rest of the nicked stuff he sells on Ebay all the time.
Other than that the Police aren't seemingly following it up so the fucker is free to keep on nicking shit and selling on the bay.

Cripes, I'm 80% sure I saw a black Dawes with fluro pink handlebar tape being ridden by someone who looked a bit odd on it- either Tuesday or Wednesday. It was on a journey from Tulse hill to Walworth road- pretty sure it was around Tulse hill or Herne Hill. Can't remember clearly but can remember thinking the guy on it looked out of place... Will keep an eye out

The old green Triumph made it back home. The system works! Picked it up from Bethnal Green Police Station earlier today. I had pretty much given up hope but surprisingly the cops did a good job, following up with multiple phone calls and such.
A few quick notes:
-Reported the bike stolen through the MET website and Cycle Task Force. Emailed in photos of the bike.
-They took the bike off a sketchy guy on Brick Lane trying to sell it, cited him for not having a vendors license, joked with him about the bike being stolen goods, not actually knowing it was.
-Did a search for Green Triumph on one of their systems/databases and came across my report.
-Called me multiple times.
-Had me come down and identify the bike in person, filled out a couple police reports.
-Got the bike back and road it home!A couple other notes:
-Bethnal Green Police Station had about 200 stolen bikes in the back yard.
-Cop said that the vast majority of them didn't have "losers" and would either be shifted on to some organizations if "roadworthy" and others would be eventually crushed. Damn shame.
-Cop inferred that getting your bike marked/registered by one of those schemes is pretty much worthless. -

What a triumph. Well done to you and the police.
Yes, one of the biggest problems for the police is that they can trace so few bikes, so make sure that you make a good report. (I personally think a 100% reporting rate would be preferable to the 'preventative database' approach, as there are so many similar bikes (frame numbers can be removed) that it's often easier to identify stolen bikes from reports than from everybody entering their bike information beforehand. Obviously, you'd need to be prepared to make your report and have all the info to hand just in case.)

We've had a break in of the secure bike parking cage at work (Borough), 2 bikes stolen. However they have been left there daily, unlocked for the last 4 months. I left notes telling them they would get stolen but then gave up trying to help them. CSB

My Bianchi Pista stolen from inside private electronic gated area just off bermondsey street last night. Pretty much stock, aside from, black crank bros candy pedals, black charge spoon saddle and no bar tape (as my poor attempt didn't survive the rain to well...) Not expecting much in the way of ever seeing it again.
Though as it was inside a gated area, the police treat it as a burglary, and are therefore coming down to take a statement and look around. Which is something I guess.

My campagnolo 1970s rear track wheel, silver high flange hub on a shallow silver rim, silver spokes, brass nipples, 14t campag cog, black gatorskin.
Old St roundabout, was left locked (only front wheels and frame!) for an hour and the rear wheel was taken using tools.
I know it's a massive long shot but any info on this would be amazing, it has quite a lot of sentimental value etc.

A fortnight ago I bought an Aeron in Deptford (London SE8) in good faith, and but I'm not happy about its provenance any more (coppithat gave me a heads-up). I don't need the bad karma.
I've googled it, no dice. Nothing directly in this thread either. Will check with Mr Plod, registers, cycle Task Force. If you know anyone that has lost an Aeron bike recently, tell them to email alldatstrakATgooglemail.com with a proper description. It hasn't been disguised.
Profit on stolen bikes isn't all that, so what's going on? Good explanation here:

Digest: Stealing bikes is pretty risk-free, and a risk-free profit... is pure profit. -

Interesting that when (call me Dave) David Camerong's bike got scoused in Notting Hill, the old bill carried on like Peter Sutcliffe was still at large.
I've just seen two coppers in Portobello Road with their backs to some bike racks talking to the public and giving directions to the European masses whilst some "yoots with intent" sized up which ones they'd rob.
I asked them what they were doing about cycle crime and one replied rather sarcastically that it's not actually seen as a massive priority for them, whereas rape, murder and drug related crime was.
I did ask him what he'd do if I murdered a rapist drug dealer who was nicking my bike...

Which I took as carte blanche to do just that.
Sax McGuinness, messenger of Creative fame has just had his GT Series 5 road bike nabbed. Silver with carbon forks and seat stays.
"Last seen with SPD pedals, crud-catcher mudguard, goldtech front hub and a wobbly back wheel."
Crap photo, sorry.
Last seen on Walworth Rd, SE17.
Cheers,
Tom
