after
on an alu frame
what do you think of the repair quality? -
• #66805
Problem with most grades of alu used in bike frames is that after welding, the frames need to be heat treated to relieve stresses around the welds.
Having said that, its just a hanger, if it falls off, not the end of the world, so I pesonally would be happy with that repair.

• #66806
I would have wet and dried it to a smoother finish personally though
disclaimer I'm no expert, so don't take what I say as gospel, just my thoughts.

mm ok, just interested in points of view
reparation will be done on steel

But maybe your wheel...

But maybe your wheel...
The actual drop out looks ok though. The paint is still intact which suggests it didnt get very hot.

They're the exact bars i ended up ordering (profile airwings right?)
So far i've only ridden round town on it but it's a hell of a lot lighter, faster and more responsive than my old '50's steel beast. It just feels "right", really happy with it :-)
I used to ride pretty long distances on that frame. It was suprisingly comfortable:

It's not the drop out that I'd be worried about. It's the hanger/thread giving way, the mech coming off and falling in the spokes that bothers me. Potential results being, at best snapped spokes and at worst death due to untimely mechanical induced accident.
Though I'm more paranoid about this than most due to having a mech hanger fail on me sending my mech into my spokes before. The wheel brought the mech round over the top of the hub and straight down through the seat stay of my shiny new Cervelo R3. Not a happy bunny and very wary of iffy hangers ever since.
ETA: The repair looks good though and it's not like the hanger takes that much force.

the guy reckons it's pretty strong, and after speaking to others,
if the hanger is done properly there shouldn't be a problem
I was with someone who used to ride in teams yesterday, did the Hell of the North, and he's got someone,
I contacted Mike at Maestro ( good guy), asking about a fella this side of the fence I thought he'd know. turns out he's an associate, and Mike reckons he should be able to steer me towards they're distributor who should sort, I've met the associate before,
a tour rider and chum of The Cannibal, .
So we'll see
arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh is still how I feel -

I found the engineers looking for a frame building course,
I'd love to make some kind of (safe) Heath Robinson whip with a chair at the front and seat and crank a the back so I can ride with my physically impaired brother -

I dibsed the Super Pista frameset that popped up for sale on here on Thursday. I picked it up the next day, built it that night and rode the crap out of it all weekend...
Got it home late Friday evening:
Early next morning:
Steerer trimmed later that afternoon:
Sled wheel on for a trip out of town the next day:
I love this thing.
Big thanks to Apollo for coming over late with tools to build this up with me and drinking much beers in the process! Also, big thanks to Butters for drinking much beers the following day and lending me hacksaw skillz. :)
I also picked up an ESB earlier in the week which I'll be building up as a super fun, bombproof, winter commuter/party bike. I have most parts waiting to go on but still looking for a decent 29er wheelset.

Haha exactly why! It's cool homie, why would you sell! It's ultimate salvage! Jealous of pretty much every part on it. This has convinced me that I definitely need a zen ring on the panny. Was yours from Japan? New?

I say give it a clean up and leave it as is. Perhaps new pads, chain, sprocket and cables.
This bikes spent 60 years in this state, and is designed for it, putting bullhorns on in would be like dressing your grandmother up in wet look leggins, an oversized T-shirt that says something like "WTF IDK" glasses with no lenses and DM's.
Just buy another singlespeed bike.
