I think this demonstrates a good point. Realistically, the distance from the kerb shown means that a driver can still get by without crossing the white lines. Once drivers have to cross the lines to overtake they seem a lot more comfortable in doing so by a bigger margin. If they can get away with saying just inside then they will, regardless of the risk to the cyclist.
I think that as cyclists we should be encouraging motorists to see the whole of the road space as suitable for use when it's safe and legal to do so.

http://www.ibiketo.ca/blog/taking-lane-when-simplistic-advice-can-make-things-worse
but it's a crap shoot if we'll meet a driver who openly threatens by driving closely, swearing at the cyclist, revving their engine or honking, or even passing as closely as possible to "teach the cyclist a lesson". It's those situations that can leave even seasoned cyclists shaking, stressed or even injured if the driver manages to sideswipe. In those cases, any safety benefit of taking the lane is lost.
Does this ever happen? Surely not. Its inhuman behaviour

Not sure if you are being sarky SkyDancer, but it happens all the time.
In fact, only yesterday I was riding with my wife through Deptford and a driver nudged her with his front near side because she was riding primary. When she shouted out to him he took a big swerve at her in what one can only assume was an active attempt to knock her off.
I had a word, perfectly calm - not a single swear/raise of voice/whiff og aggression from me - and was met with the single most red faced rage furious man (wife and kids in the car) I have ever seen.
Honestly, I have never seen someone so incandescant with rage in my entire life.He was screaming incoherantly, when I asked him to surmise his point for me he shouted "STOP YOUR BITCH WIFE TAKING UP THE ROAD".

yes was being sarcastic WjPrince, however the more we point out how outrageous this behaviour is the more anti-socia and unacceptable it should become

the question is, how do you have a meaningful debate with a moron? how can they be re-educated at the roadside?

maybe lasers are the answer

Good point. This cant be done at the roadside but through driver education elswhere.

I can if it's directed at me* but if some c-unit tried doing that to my lady, he would be getting karate chopped in the throat.
Had an instance ages ago with a guy with family in the car, he was trying to push me out of primary and beeping, then he got past and I caught him at the lights looking furious, I just said to him "You are a horrible person" then looked at his wife and kids and rode off with a self satisfied glow ;)

As I was sitting at the front of some traffic lights at Knightsbridge, a motorcycle sidles up beside me
“Aren’t you putting your bike in a strange place?” he asks me.
I look at him curiously. “What?”
“You’re blocking the car behind you” he said, gesturing at the white SUV waiting to my rear.
This was my chance. A way to convince a non-cyclist that we’re not trying to be dicks! That, in-fact, we do it for our own safety! It’s not to slow other road users down!
“It’s a lot safer to stop at the lights in the middle of the lane. It allows the car driver behind to see you and means they won’t pass too close when pulling away” I replied.
“So you want to slow down the car behind you?”
I looked at him despairingly - my arguments drowning in his apathy.
“No… I just don’t want to die”
And the traffic light turned green and he sped off. The car behind safely overtook me and went on its merry way.

I've thought about designing a device like that, although I wouldn't make it look like a sex toy. Realistically, in the long run, it will only hinder the bicycle-car interaction.

I'm bitter and twisted. I'm waiting to use the line, "I hope one of your kids gets run over by a driver like you." -

It would be good if there was a 'Drivers, chill the fuck out about about cyclists taking the lane, this is why they do it' or words to that effect.
-

It's also a pity that those advertisements visually 'condone' tailgating cyclists. I don't feel particularly relaxed when people are driving less than 2m behind me. I doubt a 'stay back' message will make it into the campaign.

I use it all the time. Really makes them think.

Other side of the coin: there's space for an overtake but belligerence/lack of awareness from cyclists who decide they must ride 2+ abreast because their conversation is too important sometime leads to unnecessary conflict.

It's a shame that TfL contradicted themselves with the cycle lane they've designed.
The cycle lane will always speak a different message no matter how many time TfL throw this poster around.

That's a difficult one
Its pleasant to ride and talk. Drivers do it sitting next to another person. It would be nice if everyone was chilled enough to facilitate paired riding on urban streets
"12 horns start to sound"
Do any of them bellow "Cunt!"?
is this programmable to LFGSS setting?
