  • I'm aching to get the kids out on the longbike.

On the plus side, the Brakes line up nicely, and are super solid. Also the bike looks amazing.

  • Cant claim its finished. Too many niggles.

Been cruising around the garden though :D

    Might commute on it tommorrow.

  • Dear lord that's an ugly crankset.

    The rest is awesome.

Are the gears all working? If so how are they pairing up?

  • I dare you weight it.

  • Looks awesome! You may need a two way radio to communicate with the kids.

  • That's mega.

  • Lee, that is fucking hideous, but quite cool at the same time.

Gross and ugly, yet practical and well thought out, with an utter fuck you to the bike porn pedants.

Definitely one for the reader's wives thread.

  • Lee, that is fucking hideous, but quite cool at the same time.

I have an ex like that. Really not much to look at, but she fucked like a steam train.

  • All hissy and take forever to warm up?

  • We need a new word in the English language for that bike.

    Chapeau SF.

  • Cheers folks.

That pic is deseiving. Your eyes assume the mammoth tyres are normal size, and it kinda looks like an extended BMX. In reality, its a fecking tank. Fugly like your favourate old hammer.

Did some fit adjustments this morning, and removed the rear mudguard. Then commuted on it. I can honestly say its the biggest f**k me I've ever had on a test ride. It takes all my strength to lug the thing to the driveway. I'm thinking bugger this, its early, I'm taking the simple'n'light fixed. Then you get on, and its sublime. You just simply cant feel the weight or the length. At least from a handling perspective.

    The brakes are perfect.
    The comfort is top notch.
The handling is stable at amazingly slow speeds.
    The gears work super smoothly.

Its instead of a second car for the furries. Part of me thinks a car would have been easier to build, and lighter. But most of me is excited at the cycling possibilities ahead.

  • Nice work SF.

  • It's wonderful.

  • Kipchoge who is playing the guitar in this shot is one of the founders of Extra Cycle and Yuba bikes more pictures of when he and his band with Yubas and Extra cycles can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/funny_cyclist/sets/72157624019686535/

    must spread rep etc

  • The longbike is now officially fully ridable. Had to take the guards off, and do some fiddling with the drop outs, but now it cruises.

First proper family outing, and I slow down to wait for Mrs Smallfurry. The 6yo gets impatient, lifts his legs back, and starts to kick the seatstay in protest. Next minute the bike jolts, and I know exactly whats happened. His right foot has disappeared into the rear wheel. His foot was pretty badly cut up, but there's no real damage.

Side panels ordered (as well as a utility deck, extra cushion, and handle strap).

  • I should point out that my rear wheel build of 36 plain guage spokes lacing a NuVinci hub to a Kris holmes rim. Was far tougher than my 6 yo's foot. Silver linings etc.

  • Ooww. At least he won't do it again.

The footboard design on that is nice. On the Dummy bits stick out and smack your Achilles tendon when manoeuvring.

Good work on the build, it looks great.

A non-cycling friend had told of a kid that lost part of their foot. In a similar accident, while sitting on a rer bike rack. I said that the Mundo is pretty built up at the back. You'd have to do something stupid to have that happen. Which should have set off alarm bells, as soon as I said it TBH.

As for the foot bed. The Mundo V4 is pretty genius when it comes to basic practical considerations.

I used some long bolts screwed into the seatstay bridge, as pretend saddle rails to mount a removable saddle bag for tools etc. This will now be nicely hidden by the side boards.

  • With all that metalwork in the way it does look like it would be perfectly safe to sit a kid on it without worry but kids will always find a way to mess up even the best laid plans. Have you considered replacing the child?

  • I can't believe that no one has suggested getting Scoble over to give your 6 year old some cycle training

He is at a genetic disadvantage.

Hes fully booked at the DJ school of swearing.

  • Hello all :)

It is not a good experience to have your child's foot jammed in the rear wheel.
I know this as well because the same happened to my 5yer old daughter on the first trip with my new Mundo last weekend.
No really damage to the foot, but we did ride to the hospital for a check.
where did you purchase your wheel skirts?
