  • OK how much should I expect to pay for a reasonable used 5D?

  • 550 - 600, I think.
    I payed 640 almost 1.5 years ago.
Came with a battery grip and 28-135, which made it a good deal.

  • Mifsuds have them for £550

  • Also (you've probably thought of this) not all lenses will work on full frame cameras.

  • Yeah I always bought lenses with a view to upgrading, even thought I've had the 400D for 5.5 years now.

That sounds like what I was expecting, thanks for all the help.

  • this is a long shot, but I am trying to remember a brand of tripods, it's called something fish, I think. They basically do very similar specs tripods to some of the expensive brands for a much lower price. Anyone knows that brand? It's not one of those ebay Chinese sellers, the company is based in the UK.

  • rocketfish? google 'fish tripods' and it comes up straight away but they seem to be an american company.

  • Redsnapper might be what you want. I have one of there manfrotto ball head copies and its the mutts..

  • ^ It is redsnapper. Google finally understood what I wanted. Do you also have their tripods? Are they as good as they seem? Looking at the load capacity and sounds impressive. I do have a large format that I drag out once in a while...

  • Is this too good to be true?

Surly Dixons won't be selling grey imports??? Or maybe they do?

  • Amazon matched that price, would much rather buy from them

I have heard Amazon sells grey imports at times. If I am going to go for that option, I'd rather go for hdew cameras, not only are they a bit cheaper, you can also pick up from their store in Surrey. Don't trust the snail mail with another over a tenner.

  • Anywhere in London where I can see and try out unnecessary and expensive follow-focus rigs for dslrs?

  • Is there such a thing as a compact digital camera with no zoom?

  • Sigma dp series are compact-ish but I wouldn't recommend them. Just get a canon S100 or a Sony RX100. Both have zoom functions but have excellent optics and are generally nice to use.

Aperture UK has a couple of decent ones in stock.mworth checking out with them, as they also offer 6 months warranty for 2nd hand stuff

    Ricoh GR

I bought a D700 from them by post last year - phoned to check stock, received next day by (free) courier, very well packed.

  • I couldn't get through to them on Friday so sent them an email to ask them to call back whenever they can. Got a call pretty much 1st thing on Sat morning. They told me they have the camera in store, so I got onto the train, got it sorted their and then! So far so good. They don't hides the fact that their stock is grey import and seem pretty nice people too. Not sure about their "store" though, pretty scary....

  • What happens if you have trouble with it?

I bought a grey market d40x a few years ago but that's a lot different to spending 800 quid

  • I have asked so as a few others, you either send it back to hdew or bring it back, they will ship it off to a guy in Scotland to get it fixed for you. A.T Johntson or something. And the truth is, how often does a modern bit of technology goes wrong with th warranty preload? You'd have to be very unlucky to have that happen to you. (TOUCH WOOD). I think the main reason why I took the risk is that they have a physical office not far from where I am and they have been there for a fair few years.

  • I had a good experience with hdew last year when I bought a 60D. Went and collected from the office nr Croydon. Nice people, no shop but a physical presence to ask questions too. Was an Asian import but was all brand new and legit. I think they have a guy out there who buys for them and ships them over, had uk cables though.Gave me some kind of 3 yr extended warranty as well. Not with canon but is probably just as good.

  • yeah, my box did look a bit battled, but if they are not imported from a lorry then it's expected. After all, it looks brand new enough to me. Then menu is obviously home made... but that' OK. I am gonna do a shutter count to see if anything is dodgy, I doubt it though. Any yeah, having an office nearby is a big plus.Mind you

Interestingly, mine comes with a European warranty card and had some Swiss writing on a sticker, so I am gonna try registering with Nikon see what happens. I have heard stories about Nikon / Canon having accepted goods bought outside of the EU. But I am not to fussed about it.
