  • Sigma dp series are compact-ish but I wouldn't recommend them. Just get a canon S100 or a Sony RX100. Both have zoom functions but have excellent optics and are generally nice to use.

    Actually ended up purchasing a DP1, against your (and plenty of reviewers) recommendations. Got it from ebay for what I think is a good price (with a flash and hood). Reckon it's limitations shouldn't seem too severe after coming from using a rangefinder.

  • It depend on whether you find the quality of the photos overcome the cons of a poor user interface.

    I loved mine, I'm even considering getting a DP2 Merrill.

  • The new Sony DSC RX100 apparently have a bigger sensor (1") than the Fujifilm X10, and are a lots smaller, very pocketable actually for a reasonable amount (claim price £450);

  • looks 'cute'

    I'd defs snap that flash though...

  • The DP1 is an awesome little camera. Treat it like a film camera (ie take your time) and you'll be blown away with the results.

    Let down by a slow lens. Otherwise I would be all over this.

  • 1.8's slow?

  • unless you're referring to the aperture at the max focal length;

  • Its only f/1.8 for one millimeter of focal length!

  • Wait till you try the DP1/2, especially with it's 4 second lags between each picture.

  • Ha I was going to say that one Ed.

    Why do you need a lens faster than that anyway?

    Exactly.

    Er, shallower DOF at long end, keep ISO down relative to other values?

  • Not sure why is that an issue, I mean we have DSLR camera whose F-stop begun at F/3.5 but it didn't stop people from taking photos.

    I don't think it's possible to get a bigger aperture throughout the range given the size of the body, otherwise the lens would wound up being bigger.

    shallow DOF won't be that noticeable on those camera, even if the sensor is larger than usual.

  • yea, keeping the max aperture constant over a wide zoom range makes the lens monstrous.
    if you divide the focal length by the aperture you get the min. diameter that your lens elements end up with.
    a 300mm with f2 would be at least 150mm wide + housing, motor etc.

  • Having lost custody of a Nikon D80 in a recent breakup, and finally destroying my heavily used Panasonic TZ3 in a snowboarding crash I'm getting back into the camera market. Have been eyeing off a micro 4/3 set-up as I'd like something small enough to fit in my camebak mountian biking, and a DSLR is just to big. Have been tossing up between the new Olympus OM-D and the Pansonic G series. The OM-D is a very nice bit of kit, love the digital view finder, but they are rather pricey and I'm not sure its worth the extra cash over a Pen P3 or GX1. Anyone had much experience with the OM-D or Pen series? Also any recomendation for a second lense, something in the 14mm to 25mm range?

  • Go for the Pen, the OM-D is for retrogrouch.

  • One of my exes had the Pen 1 and I really liked it. Quality info for you there, invoice is in the post.

  • I have just posted a Lumix GF2 twin lens kit in the classifieds for only £350 if anyone is interested.

  • I am being superlazy here but can anyone recommend a lightweight compact digital camera for cycle touring? Tough, inexpensive and easy to operate from the back of a tandem, ideally.

  • I rate whichever of the canon IXUS range you can find on the best offer at the moment. in the world of cheap compacts they tend to take good pictures, have good fun features and are pretty well made.

  • ace, cheers.

  • Hey guys, I've got some work in a group show in EastGallery next week. The exhibition is called Latent21 and it's a bunch of 3rd n 4th year BA and HND graduates.

    I can't make it down but feel free to pop in and drink some beer for me on the opening night which will be on the 16th from 6.30pm.

  • Does anyone know what he manufacturers stated action life for the D3 is? I'm not talking about average life span, but rather what nikon actually say the number of actions the camera is expected to do.

  • Usually 150,000 for a pro model is about right.

    300000 is the what the shutter is rated at.

    D700 is rated at 150000.

    But they are only a rating some can last forever!
