    Eye problems, hay fever?

I love'em both equally you see...

  • Any tips for keeping the Garmin sweet for a 1-way ride? I've managed a 10 hour day without turning it off before, but only just, and with a lot of dicking about with the map.

turn off all the ant+ gubbins? minimise backlight? turn it on only once you lose sight of the lights in front?

  • Further to ^ and ^^ - anyone have a garmin for the return leg? I mean obviously we will smash it at 52 kpm there and be done by 1 a.m. or some shit and following the all the headlights home but just in case we're slightly slower would someone be willing to upload it as a back up? If no one has any cribbies I'll be making my own but of course I love technology

    I haz... ^

    and also...

  • I'll be doing route directions for the return, happy to share. Though I am quite disorganised so they might be a bit last minute. And potentially wrong.

  • ^ Cheers! Let me know, that'd be great

  • riding the same as last year, just with a different handlebar set up this time. riding 68x16 was fine. don't want to ride my geared bike as i don't trust it will either a) come back or b) come back without any scratches.

plus last year a number of people weren't at smithfields to collect their bikes at the same time for one reason or another so a number were just left propped up against either the side of the lorry or nearby walls. i don't want that happening to my pride and joy...

Good call Sam, see you in the Ship for the mid-ride rendezvous where we can discuss the ride back over several beers and a full english.

    Turn the backlight off.

  • Charge it, leave it off and only turn it on 5 minutes before departure. If it goes dead it should be day light, you should still be surrounded by cyclists and can tag on the back of someone who looks like they know where they are going. They will probably get lost and take you on a tour of the nature reserve first though.

  • Use chap nav instead, much easier and quicker.

Providing you don't follow the wrong person like I did.

    say what?!

  • Greetings folks,
Perhaps it is just me, but for fear of sounding like a complete Luddite, do you really need a GPS sat nav type thing anyway?
All you have to do is find London Fields by 8 pm where you will find about 1500 cyclists ready to roll through the night.
Then just follow them - easy.
Throughout the ride you will see groups heading to the coast, just find your right pace ( I reccommend steady eddy style - er it is a long way after all ...) and follow the red lights in front of you.
Personally, I took detailed route maps of Essex and Suffolk with me last year and didn't look at them once.
Enjoy the magic of the ride, the beauty of the countryside at night and when morning comes, and just follow your fellow cyclists....
Peace and Love to each and every one,
    Tim

well i was there standing waiting for my bike at the front and the people were just offloading them so you had to recognise your bike and shout 'mine' then come to the front.

a number of bikes on my lorry weren't reunited with their owners straight away (either the owners had walked off, not got on the coach etc etc) and were left propped up against walls or side of the lorry. i was keeping my eye on them in case some scumbag decided to take a fancy to any of them.

i just wouldn't want there to be any chance that i was separated from my very expensive bike hence why i don't mind doing it on my beater!

  • wow.

Coming back from L2B, we were given numbers, as were our bikes, and each bike truck was numbered too so you knew which one your bike was on..

    I only have one bike!

My Edge 205 can only manage 6 hours now so I've rigged up an external USB battery pack which should keep it going for days.

(but I'm not riding back because that is for crazies!)

I was pleased to have my GPS last year, without it I'd have followed some others up a wrong turn. The route sheet is good but it's easier to follow a directions when the thing beeps a few hundred feet before a turn.

  • Some of the best bits are when you get lost, and with route sheets and other people you're never lost for long. Half a mile extra when you're doing 120 miles is no big deal.

  • I have an Edge 200, anyone know how long the battery will last? I get a bit anal about Strava so need to track it all. Thinking I'll use my phone Tooting>Start, then Garmin to Dunwich and phone again End>Norwich. Then I can stitch them all together in notepad the day after.

First time I did Dunwich and back we got lost and ended up with 270 miles on the clock. I would advise anyone considering riding back to take a compass at the very least :l

  • I didn't have a Garmin but did bump into a chap that had one but had made the same wrong turn as me just past Framlingham. We both stared blankly at the thing for a few minutes until another chap came along who knew the roads well enough to get us back on the right track. We also found a couple of other strays along the way. I am going to stick with Chap Nav again this year.
