  • Anyone seen these online anywhere or in a shop?
    http://road.cc/content/review/43453-minoura-spacegrip-sgs-300m

  • I've never bought from them. I looked at my regulars - pbk, ribble, wiggle, sjs.
Prefer not to sign up to new retailer if at all possible.

  • Why has it been what might well be months since I last checked the bike porn thread?

  • If I earnt slightly over the tax allowance (Student) but proportionally paid a lot of tax, am I entitled to a partial refund?

I only earnt around 8k but paid around 1k in tax

  • yes definitely

  • Was fairly sure, just prefer looking silly on here

    Ta

  • Well I've been to my local (only) lbs and his wife pretty much said we wont help unless you buy from us.

So I need a grown up to tell me what I need.

    Fork
    Steerer 210mm
    Length 375mm
    Width 110mm

    Head Tube
    Length 120mm
    Diameter 35mm

What the flipping flip do I buy?

  • Measure the internal diameter of the head tube, probably 30.0mm. In that case, you need a 1" conventional headset, and a 1" fork with a steerer length of ~155mm for a threaded headset or a minimum of 200mm for threadless (the recommended solution - threaded headsets and quill stems are inferior)

  • Do I need 700cc or is there an alternative?

  • You want the axle to crown dimension of the fork to be as close as possible to the old one, unless you know what you're doing and are deliberately changing it.

  • Do I have really weak fingers, pro riders have really strong fingers or do pro teams have bidons that are much softer and more flexible than any that I've come across?

You see them effortlessly squeeze the shit out of them when they're drinking, but the bodies of all mine (mostly Elite Hygiene) are way too stiff to really do that (may also have too small an opening to allow a high enough flow rate, but I don't think the bottles would flex like that even with the lid off).

    Late to the charge here....
I've always known Elite bottles to be too stiff. Not just your weak fingers. SiS and Hi5 are great though.

  • Where's the best place to get a photo book done? I'm not sure what size I'd like (guess A4 will be fine)

Looking for cost and a few options on colours and lay out.

  • which car hire companies offer bike racks as an option?

I've used Blurb a couple of times and been very happy with the results

  • I've been redishing a wheel and have tightened the drive side side significantly more that the non-drive side,
without any special tools (just using my spoke wrench) how can I know if i've over tightened spokes?
Will the difference in tension between the sides be detrimental to the wheel?

  • dished wheels always have higher tension in the drive side spokes. I'm not sure how you can tell if they are over tightened, possibly by comparison with another dished wheel?

  • Can anyone tell me if there is any major difference (apart from weight, cost and ratios!) between SRAM PG1050 MTB Cassette: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=55201 and a SRAM PG1050 Road Cassette: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=51846 ? I would like to run the 12-26 ratio (i.e. MTB cassette) on my Gazelle with Rival groupset - will this work?

  • I would like to run the 12-26 ratio (i.e. MTB cassette)

12-26 is a road cassette, it will be fine with Rival.

  • lots and lots of places online

Ta. I gave up and ordered from gbcycles.

The difference in tension is normal and is one of the drawbacks of dished wheels. Even the slight dishing of a single fixed track hub can cause noticeable differences in tension between drive/non-drive side spokes.

You can test whether the spokes are over-tightened by stress relieving the spokes. You squeeze parallel pairs of spokes one each side (assuming both sides are laced in a cross pattern) as hard as you can. Wear leather gardening gloves or something. Go round the wheel squeezing them and then check if the wheel has gone out of true. If it has then you need to back the spoke tension down a bit, re-true and try again.

It's a bit hard to describe which spokes to squeeze - if you can get hold of a good wheel building book they usually have a diagram to explain it. You're squeezing two spokes that are on the same side with one hand, and do the same on the other side with the other hand.

Thanks a lot - I was getting confused by the Chain reaction website and the 1050 12-26 seems to be discontinued elsewhere. Will get on and order.

  • thinking of buying an inflatable kayak to mess about on this summer, mainly on local rivers but also in shallow surf.

Got a budget o £150 and would need to sit 2 people and 160kg, anyone got any recommendations?

  • Had a gumotex palava for years and years, it's great. I think they're a bit over your budget though? look out for a second hand one, they're so much more fun to use than your average floppy disaster.
