  • Some timely information below (with thanks to Greenwich Cyclists) on police action against motorists.

Subject: Operation Cubo: 555 cars seized - latest from NSY

In the latest day of action against uninsured drivers in London a further 555 cars were seized and 85 people arrested.

The ninth Operation Cubo, which took place on Thursday 24 May again featured hundreds of officers across London targeting uninsured drivers to disrupt criminal activity. As with all the previous days of action, boroughs were supported by Traffic, Territorial Support Group, Safer Transport Command and other teams in the co-ordinated series of operations, which included road-side check points.

This forms part of a commitment by the Commissioner in October last year to target criminals and disrupt their activities. Since the first Cubo over 4,500 vehicles have been seized, in addition to the thousands of cars which are removed from the streets during day to day business. Hundreds of people have also been arrested for a range offences since the renewed push on uninsured drivers began.

Uninsured drivers are more likely to be involved in criminal activity, five times more likely to be involved in collisions and less likely to have vehicles in a road-worthy condition. A number of the arrests and seizures made yesterday demonstrate how Cubo is disrupting criminal activity. There were arrests for a range of offences, including four suspected gang nominals in Enfield for possession of CS spray; theft of vehicles, possession with intent to supply heroin, crack and cannabis. There have been a number of disqualified drivers arrested during the operation.

Operation Cubo 'Silver', Chief Superintendent Rob Jones, from Newham said: "The ninth Operation Cubo achieved excellent results, with many boroughs - including Safer Transport Command, Ealing, Hackney, Lambeth, Wandsworth, Bromley, Croydon, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Greenwich and Newham achieving over 20 seizures. Hammersmith and Fulham had their highest ever seizures with 19. All over London, teams worked very hard in the heat, with arrests for a range of offences, including suspected gang suspects in possession of CS Spray.

"Over four and a half thousand vehicles have now been seized on Cubo operations, removing uninsured vehicles from our streets. Cubo is a very visible tactic that deters criminals and reassures law abiding people. Traffic OCU played a leading role in the planning of this Cubo operation, and their support to boroughs was key to our success."

Operation Cubo was launched in October 2011. There have been nine days of action since then and the total number vehicles seized during these days is 4547; arrests: 767.

  • would be interested to know what %age of cars were not insured

  • That's excellent news.

  • Good.

I got a message back from Roadsafe about the guy who spat at me and they told me to report it to my police station. Not sure I will do it yet but thinking about it.

  • And yesterday in Trafalgar Square, we all started to go through a green light (bunch of cyclists etc) when a Kelbray lorry came speeding from the right, hooting. He obviously had gone through a red light or maybe was stuck in traffic but he really pushed his speed as he went through towards us. Nice one. I didn't get his number unfortunately.

  • Please do report it, spitting is a vile and degrading behaviour. And dangerous too because you can transmit TB, pneumonia and other nasty diseases.

  • Hello, been a lurker here for quite a while...

...had a driver nudge into me in stationary traffic today, and then call me a "fucking stupid idiot" for being there. I got the plate number, and a photo of him. Does anyone know where I can find extra info from the plate number (L058 NKE)? Pretty sure it was Addy Lee, but didn't hang around to check the back of the vehicle.

Who's the best place to report this to? Roadsafe, PHV company? Anyone else?

    Cheers.

  • report to roadsafe

if you think it was addison lee report it to them and tfl too

  • I was waiting to turn right from Clerkenwell Road onto Goswell Road, down towards Barbican Tube.
Stationary in the middle of the road, right arm out waiting for a gap in the traffic so I could proceed, when a scooter came haring round my right side and head butted my arm. He then swerved back across my front and into the stream of traffic going straight ahead down Clerkenwell Rd.

Didn't get his plates, but a 20mph scooter helmet to the elbow fucking hurts.

I was more aghast then angry.

  • had you looked behind before signalling?

  • Yeah,
I was clear, defo didn't turn across him.

I'd been waiting stationary for my gap for about 45 sec or sommat

  • I'm attending this Speed congress tomorrow:

'Speed, the 4th international congress on speed reduction and control'
    http://speedcongress.wordpress.com/

Should be interesting...will report anything noteworthy back here.

Please do report here missmouse. Crucial road danger reduction stuff
Sorry it's taken me this long to report back on this Speed Congress organised by Brake, the road safety charity.

I'm happy to send the Agenda and other docs to anyone who is interested.

Particularly interesting to hear about how Sweden and Western Australia are tackling the issues around safety on the road and both the public outcry and political will behind new measures crucially speed reduction and ways to enforce that.

My favourite talk was by Prof John Wann about the human error of speed perception especially child and elderly road users, and how it's not just a much a matter of education or being aware but it's actual cognitive ability (or lack there of) which results in these age groups being less able to judge vehicle speed - it's simple optical geometry. Also how much more effective good headlights are than reflective or high vis clothing, on motorbikes at least. I presume it is the same for bicyclists.

Talks were also given (I should add that all talks were followed by interesting Q&A sessions) by others including the director of the 20's Plenty For Us campaign, Rod King, who is always good to hear. Here's a map they created of UK road casualties in case you've not seen it: http://www.20splentyforus.org.uk/uk_casualty_maps.htm

  • Astonishingly cuntish driving of the highest order on the way home this evening.

Just after 8pm I was approaching this junction at the SE corner of Regent's Park (heading North, so on the left obviously). Looked over my shoulder at the car behind and with plenty of time, moved out into primary to discourage him from passing me through the bollards. Then noticed him start to accelerate rather too aggressively around my right hand side. Realising there was no way we were both gonna fit through the gap, I was about to bail to the left sharpish, but need not have worried as the utter twat floored it iin second gear and went round the right of both sets of bollards.

Unfortunately I didn't get his plates (not that much would've come of reporting it) but fortunately he was long gone by the time I got to Parkway otherwise there could well have been something worth reporting.

  • You got clarkson'd. Probably thought he was terribly clever pulling off that maneuver.

  • Was walking across the ped crossing just off museum of london roundabout when an addisson lee driver obviously tired of waiting 20 seconds for the traffic to get moving again so he could turn right into little britain (the van in front was half blocking the entrance to the turning.

so he revs his engine, mounts the kerb and drives across the pavement to get into the sideroad.

then proceeds to pull up 10 yards along the street to park.

SRSLY mr addlee Y U NO wait 15 seconds if all you're doing is pulling off the road to park up.

didn't even have a passenger on board. addbsolutely no nleed

  • I reported a large White Conway truck ...
Only got a partial plate as it was dirty. ...

Does anyone know where I can find extra info from the plate number (L058 NKE)? ...

I recommend going to a car valuer or car insurance website while it is still fresh in your memory. Try out a few different lettering combinations if you are unsure and you'll have a chance to clarify the license plate before you proceed with reporting.
For example, it seems Teaforme got mixed up on number '0' and letter 'o'.
