  • If it is fixed then there's not foot retention which is even worse!!!!

There aren't any pedals on it?

Therefore there is nothing to bash your shins due to lack of retention.

    Safe and light.

  • Crumpton, 3.2kg.. so I ride two at once..

  • shit fuck, this thread restarts thinking about my seta and the weight, especially the wheels

  • Well, I think im happy buying extralite stem for £150 and so on. I don't know what a light fixed bikes weighs as not many people have tried and documented it.

Careful with the stem bolts. They underrate the required torque.

    • Syntace do good quality light weights at decent prices.
  • Why not? **I built up a fast bike to ride slowly **and make me smile, you built up a bike with painstakingly sourced outdated components to make you smile, if Iain's lightweight distance bike makes him smile then it doesn't matter how it's being ridden (or not).

    Bullshit modesty

  • Integrated stem and bar combo will be plenty stiff + chopped will save a good amount.

  • But flopped will make it a very funny shape

  • I take it you haven't seen Ian in the flesh?

  • he's one big flopper.

  • It occurred to me earlier that Iain owns exactly the same frame that I do- albeit 4cm smaller and therefore lighter.

So using mine as a reference, with a brake on the front only, and no mechs, cassette, battery, wiring harness, power meter, shifters and second ring on the front you'd have a pretty light fixed (ENO hub required of course).

I'm at 6.57kg, you can work out the projected weight by referencing the WW listings and deducting each component.

If of course there is any appeal to using a frame which you already own, and know fits you.

  • Its an idea that I have been contemplating as I have the drops already. The issues being the wrong shape and the fact that I think that by cutting it, it may damage the integrity of the carbon fibre.

I find trying to find bull horns very difficult. Not sure why but I know there are some decent light carbon jobbies out there, but I cant find them.

deda make some nice carbon jobbies, so do profile... carbon bullhorns are nice, but pricey.

Do you think carbon bars are the best option for an ape hanger such as yourself? They won't take too kindly to being driven into a bus... Think my mash is somewhere around 7.5-8kg. Could easily be lighter with carbon fork steerer, seatpost, stem, bars, lighter pedals... But then I don't think I'd trust it the same.

  • I'd guess that unless you're talking about serious wwennie carbon parts with rider limits, then decent carbon will be just as strong as light weight alu parts.

Mos def would not worry about carbon seatposts and carbon steerers. TBH other than price or aethetics I don't see why anyone wouldn't use a carbon seatpost - they've been around for jonks are more comfortable, and generally lighter.

  • I cant see the point of a carbon stem, and those integrated stem/bars are always bloody heavy.

After spending a lot of time building up my BMC to be as light as possible while staying true to the famed stiffness of the frameset. Its probably 6.8Kg, which I'm chuffed with. But its the stiffness that you feel when riding, not the weight.

  • I was surprised when following dammits thread to find that carbon stems are heavier than their alu counterpart.

And Neil, I am keeping the 'dale as it is:-) I love that bike as a geared beast! It needs more tweaking but that's because I don't think I'm in the optimal riding position, but that's no reason to go and bastardise it by turning it into a FGSS.

Go see Scherrit before you fucked that old back of your.

  • I think my ARx Ltd stem is ~10 grams lighter than the Pro version, for an additional £200 in cost, which has to be a record for pointless expenditure.

    (Bought mine second hand)

  • KCNC SC wing.
100g for 100mm 31.8 version, stiff, and less than 70 squids.

  • ^Lighter than my £225 Arx Ltd.

  • I have a 100MM 26.0 version of that stem sat in a box because all my bikes are now 31.8.
    It's an awesome stem.

  • I getting dangerously into this.

  • For budget weenie stems it doesn't get much better than the Kalloy Uno Asa 105. My 100mm one sits at 100g after swapping the bolts for some ti ones, and only cost me £23 (I already had the bolts).

  • Weight Weenie stems fail the 'super safe' game plan of the OP.

  • How?
