  • KCNC SC wing.
100g for 100mm 31.8 version, stiff, and less than 70 squids.

This should be quite safe surely?! It looks like a normal stem.

  • How?

    They're not safe.

  • It's very hollow with smaller bolts than most stems. I didn't notice any flex using one but I'm half the size of you.

  • For budget weenie stems it doesn't get much better than the Kalloy Uno Asa 105. My 100mm one sits at 100g after swapping the bolts for some ti ones, and only cost me £23 (I already had the bolts).

Glad you said that, I've got one in the post.

  • Even a Ritchy WCS or a Deda Zero are only around the 120g mark and both are pretty cheap and easily available second hand.

But those Kalloy ones are really good value.

  • They're not safe.

As in, you've snapped one/seen one fail, or just mistrust stuff with "lightweight" in the description?

They had a stem recall a while ago due to faceplates that were too thin. Much the same as ITM's THE stem.

When you remove most of the material that you're hanging onto.. bad things are more likely to happen.

  • Ah, not aware that you were referring to that specific stem- thought you were stating "all lightweight stems are dangerous"

  • No. Of course not.

But, for stems, I would always err on the side of caution.
Especially bigger riders who like to give things a 'bit of a flex now' and then.
I personally avoid 2-bolters after finding hairline cracks in a Bontrager stem I had. That was certainly not lightweight.

  • Specifically which stem isnt safe Hippy?

    KCNC SC wing?

    Kalloy Uno Asa 105?

  • That KCNC is widely used by MTBers. I would'nt think twice about getting one, and I'm neckless lump with no cycling finese what so ever.

The small Ti bolts are going to be sensitive to poor installation though.

  • No. Of course not.

I now have a four bolt stem, in no small part due to you talking about issues with 2 bolt stems in the past.

  • I read a peice by Easton claiming 2 bolt stems were safer. Mainly due to even tightening IIRC.

  • Kalloy have their own ideas on design for even tightening.

(top right diagram is the 'interesting' bit)

[ I feel I have reached a new level of geekdom with the above post. ]

  • The KCNC Ti bolts are the standard M5 that most stems use. The difference is the head which is 'mushroomed' and uses a smaller allen key socket.

  • The (Ti?) bolt in my Token seatclamp had a cunning torque limiting feature- the head rounded off at 3Nm, stopping you overtightening the clamp.

  • please buy these:

    and this

  • £900/pair?

    Lol

  • £900 for that home made look?

  • £900/pair?

    Lol

    yep. fucking ridiculous

  • i think i'll try the kcnc stem (would save 42g) and also change the brakelever (would save 15g). ridiculous, but funny.

  • What brake lever would you suggest?

  • currently i have a sram tt900, but will probably go for a fsa vision trimax carbon or profile design carbon, will see. brakelever and stem can only save a few gram.
still thinking about a rear wheel, but not willing to buy it in parts and build it up, so i'm looking around, maybe something from asia.

  • Brakes are too heavy. Brakless ftw

Vision will be heavier than your SRAM after you've added the adapter needed to fit it to normal bars. Vision bars are 22.2mm and their levers fit to the outside diameter, proper bars are 23.8mm.
