Oh, really? To be honest I hadn't specifically checked as I don't have my phone in front of me. That's no good then.
-

Get the wireless drive, use your phone as a personal hotspot to create a wifi network. Sorted.
Might even be able to create a wifi network from the ipad?
I'm travelling so won't have a phone contract and going to lots of diffent countries which makes PAYG difficult. £70 for a storage device when travelling is a bit much.
I've just relalised that I'll have electricity in the campervan (belm) so will try a powered hub.
Or go with the SD card way. -

Quick one, now apple's gone all iCloud, it seems I need to upgrade my osx, which I'm slightly loathe to do. But will do if there arent major issues with it, screwing over other programmes. Currently running 10.6.8.

Are you talking about going from Snow leopard to Lion? If so I'd avoid it. Lion has caused me a unamount of hassle since it was released. I do not rate it and have went back to SN!
-
• #3181
My machine iMac has slowed down significantly since I upgraded to Lion. Can't be arsed to revert though...
-
• #3182
iCloud is the worst* of all cloud solutions at the moment. What is forcing the upgrade corny?
-
• #3183
yeah its to go from snow leopard to lion. I'm working on an old mac pro (desktop) and also have a mac pro (laptop) which is on snow leopard as well..
VB, nothing's forcing the upgrade, just want to take the hassle out of moving contacts around, as I've now got more on my phone than on my computer as itunes now doesn't sync back up with my desktop, as it now keeps it in the cloud, except to access the cloud you've got to have lion.
just a minor ballache, but one that annoys me, as I'm trying to simplify everything, and get shit organised..
-
• #3184
You use gmail though... use the contacts in there, it's seamless sync and works with everything.
One of the things that blows my mind about Android is the whole: Turn on brand new phone, whole thing has contacts, email and calendar within a few moments without connecting to a computer.
I'm not sure how attached you are to the iPhone, but whilst I would never suggest someone move from a MacBook Pro (it remains best in class and perfect for the job)... I think Android surpassed iPhone ages ago.
I weep inside when I hear that people still have to struggle with contact sync. It's a solved problem.

Don't get Lion. It's shit. I went there, then came back again.

• #3186
Dang it.
Guess it'll be the tourist info place for a paper map then.
Find a Wifi spot in Barca, look up the bits of map you need, then take screenshots at different levels of zoom = all the maps and no roaming charges.

Don't need the phone to be connected to phone network to create a wifi hotspot.
[EDIT] Yes you do. Bizarrely.

You need cellular data no?
-
• #3189
thank you all for the lion info.
Will have to just get past my irritation with the contact issue...

Yup, I was wrong. Seems abit silly, though. You can make a fake wifi network with a mac.

My iphone 3 has just broken after 4 years of service, and apparently O2 'don't do loyalty' and I dont want to change my contract or sign a 24 month one so...If i buy a second hand iphone 3gs, and get it unlocked, when I go to restore it from my backup on my computer in order to get all my photos, number etc put on it, will it lock the phone back on to the original network, or does this not affect the lock of the phone?
-
• #3192
Nah if its unlocked, it should just restore all the stuff you had on you're old phone. So the new ones like the old one if that makes sense!

• #3193
thanks

Hope you're not still paying £35 a mont for whatever the original contract was... iPhone contracts were never that great. I went down to £20 a month once my contract wwas out and it's a rolling contract so I can cancel anytime...

What data amount do you get on that Chris?
-
• #3196
Erm... some? Never go over... 500MB according to my O2 app.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a NAS drive. I want it purely to store my music collection on and then stream it to my various computers.
-
• #3198
Hobo, head back to p64 and there was abit of a discussion about it, but our glorious leader posts thusly
QNAP NAS are what I use... they're pretty awesome.
I won't recommend my model, but only because it has 6 x 3TB drives in it and it's way OTT for what you want.
That said... the fundamental NAS software is identical on the lower end machines, and it can do everything you've asked of it.
The equivalent 2 disk one is this:
QNAP TS-219P II Turbo 512MB Network Attached Storage: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & AccessoriesBut you can basically get 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8 disks slots.

So i bought a cheap SSD for my 2007 iMac as its been on the slow down for a couple of months now.
Anyone had any experience of dismantling one of the Alu iMacs? I'm going to follow the iFixit guide but wondering if there's any other tips that are useful?
Also, has anyone installed from a time machine backup? I'm guessing it's quite straight forward?

So, i replaced my internal hdd with this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/288065-sandisk-120gb-ultra-ssd-sdssdh-120g-g25
It's only SATA II but the mac isn't SATA III compatible anyway.
To do the same, follow these steps:
Buy or acquire T6 & T8 Torx screwdrivers & Phillips Screwdriver
Buy SSD Drive, 2.5" -> 3.5" hdd adaptor: http://www.ebuyer.com/168671-kingston-2-5-to-3-5-hard-drive-bracket-and-screws-sna-br-35
Buy SSD (duh)
Create a bootable USB key of Lion Recovery Partition: MacRumors Forums - View Single Post - Lion recovery USB image to DVD
Clone original drive on an external USB drive: http://help.bombich.com/kb/usage-scenarios/i-want-to-clone-my-entire-hard-drive-to-a-new-hard-drive-or-a-new-machine (make sure this runs by plugging it in and booting from it, holding down option key, on a restart)
Follow this guide: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac-Intel-20-Inch-EMC-2133-and-2210-Hard-Drive-Replacement/1008/1#.T7oYTdx86So
It took about 30 mins to dismantle and re-mantle the iMac and it now runs like an absolute dream. iTunes opens on one bounce!!
CityMaps2Go looks great, doesn't seem to cover spain though?
