  • So is there no way to have an external hard drive for iPad since IOS 5 has taken away the ability to plug in USB devices that aren't powered?

Wifi is no good as I'm on the road, so can't use Dropbox or iCloud either as I'd like to store a load of films.

I also don't want to spend too much either. Awkward I know.

  • i'll buy the iPad, you buy a kindle + ebooks?

    sounds good, doesn't it

  • Wicksie, you could go down the 'wi-drive' route

    I've seen 32GB available too.

    EDIT Bang 500GB

  • Thanks medear, that's a bargain.

But I'm on the road (for 2 months), I don't have the internet (can't find a European provider for 3g either) and I'd like to have a catalogue of things to watch.

I already have a kindle kboy ;) Looks like I'll be using it much more than the iPad at this rate.

EDIT: Found this. Nice, but pricey

    Out of my budget sadly.

Hyperdrive also do a 2.5" drive case that's compatible, if you've got an existing hdd you could drop in there. Will take up to 1TB.

One on ebay for £94ish: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170696961474

  • You could abandon Apple.

There's nowt wrong with an Archos PMP and it would give you more of the functionality you want, unless your desire is just "iTunes Apps".

  • This goes for any larger company.

Not true actually. There are some large companies who, for historical reasons, a culture of very good corporate governance or genuinely excellent corporate and social responsibility are broadly a force for good. I know, I work for one.

I wouldn't include Apple in this list right now, but iPadgate has been a massive lesson for them and given how successful they are at other aspects of their business they may still surprise us by learning from what has happened and genuinely changing their ways.

It's not easy if you're a graphic designer. I've been using Apple products since they were beige. It's a necessity to have a Mac so I naturally stick to them for my other digital 'needs'. Syncing makes like easier.

It's just annoying and expensive when you have to use 'work arounds' when they decide to change things.

I thought I could plug in a HDD without having to pay around £100 for a new one. I don't have this to spend. I just want to watch watch films without the internet.

BTW, that 500GB one Clefty does need a wireless network, but I'm think the kingston ones don't. So it's looking like 32GB for £70.

Just looking at Hyperdrive. I have an old ish LaCie HD so no idea if it's 2.5" SATA HDD or not. If not that set up is £155 min.
There's also this which is pricey

I'm wondering if this self powered usb hub would work with the camera connection kit.

  • could you not use the camera connection kit and then just use sd cards as storage media?

(i don't own an ipad, i was just wondering)

  • If you can drag and drop files to an SD then I would say so. Will give it a go.

  • I've been investigating this myself recently, as I'm about to head off to Peru for two months – it would be lovely to take an ipad to be able to view/delete images on a larger than 3" screen. It seems it's nigh on impossible to view photos fullscreen on an SD card without importing them first.

I did stumble across this though

    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20110314054357575

    – a hack that requires a bit of forethought, but a clever way of using SD cards as extended storage for ipad. Import the film you want to watch, watch it, then delete it from the pad when you're done.

Would be nice if this workaround wasn't so clunky, but then Apple would find it harder to charge a premium for 64gb ipads and would lose out on itunes video sales. And a company that made $128 million a day in the last reported quarter couldn't bear to lose out on some profit, right?

What you miss out is that this is how they made that much profit per day. They had to get this thinking deep under their skin, part of them, in their blood. Now it's natural for them to squeeze every bit of profit from every bit of the supply chain and consumer relationship. You're asking them to go against their nature, for your convenience. As the scorpion would say to the frog, "it's in my nature.".

  • This seems to work! I'm only not 100% because because I don't have capabilities to convert to to MP4 on my old PowerBook.
But I plugged a SD in, created a sub folder in the DCIM called 100DICAM and named the file P0000001.
This open up in 'Photos' and I was able to download it, then delete.
Previously I plugged the SD in without the sub folder and it didn't work.
Clunky but cheap work around. I'm happy with that. :)

    Thanks kid scruff!

  • Get the wireless drive, use your phone as a personal hotspot to create a wifi network. Sorted.

Might even be able to create a wifi network from the ipad?

  • ok nerds, i need some help.

After a recent foray into rooting my phone via terminal i now get this error whenever i try to use a sudo command.

    ie.

    sudo open -a TextEdit /etc/hosts

    -bash: sudo: command not found

I did some googling and tried a couple of things like repairing disk permissions with disk utility but to no avail. Can anyone help?

  • Is it the command "open" that is the problem?

Have you tried: sudo vi /etc/hosts
    ?

BTW, if that works, then to exit it is: :q
Which is a colon and then a q.

    when i try:

i just get the same error:

    -bash: sudo: command not found

    Install sudo?

how would i go about doing that?

  • i get

    -bash: open: command not found

  • I'm on o2 for my iphone and off to Barcelona tomorrow for a few nights.

I know I need to avoid going on tinternet other than where I can get a wifi connection so I don't get charged a horrendous amount for data but what about the maps? Would be handy if I can use them over there.

  • maps is data too, don't know how much though

  • try just typing "help"

    i get:

    help
    GNU bash, version 3.2.48(1)-release (x86_64-apple-darwin11)
These shell commands are defined internally. Type help' to see this list. Typehelp name' to find out more about the function name'. Useinfo bash' to find out more about the shell in general.
Use man -k' orinfo' to find out more about commands not in this list.

A star (*) next to a name means that the command is disabled.

    Dang it.

Guess it'll be the tourist info place for a paper map then.

The Seagate drive has a built in wifi network
    (taken from the FAQ)

"Do I need an Internet connection for GoFlex Satellite to work?
No. The GoFlex Satellite is its own wireless network, so your i-Device or other Wi-Fi enabled devices can access the GoFlex Satellite without an existing network. However, you cannot surf the web or check email while connected to the GoFlex Satellite. You must reconnect to an existing network to have Internet.|

I have an app called CityMaps2Go (or something like that) that has offline copies of maps that work with the GPS. Download Barcelona before you go then you won't need the default version.
