When my MBP starts to struggle I'll be doing that ^ but with this: http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=OBSXGB-UNB&Category_Code=STORHDOPTIBAY
If you use this guide (i've randomly selected a MBP model), there is a link to buy the correct drive replacement bay at a lower cost: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Early-2011-Dual-Hard-Drive/8519/1#.T7ohwtx86Sp
They're also a nicer design etc.

Anyone using their phone thethering with an iPad. Success?
-
• #3205
I tried it using the iPhone's "personal hotspot" feature. It works just fine. But as it's only 3g data speeds, at best, and ipads load a hell of a lot more than iphones, things are bloody slow. Best as an emergency measure.

Ahhh
-
• #3207
Really? Seems fine to me. Same speed as if you had a chip in the iPad. I've had no problems using it to send high res photos from my iPad to clients on the fly.

• #3208
I pair mine with my android phone and it works fine, pretty usable really for checking mail and interwebs.

Yes, it's the same speed as if you were browsing 3G through the iPad (or Edge, or WAP, depending on what's available wherever you happen to be) but that is still slower than WiFi by a huge amount, and often slower than looking at the same stuff on the phone, as you tend to load more data on an iPad than a phone.
This may also be because O2 has shitty data bandwidth. -
• #3210
Well yeah, course it's slower than wifi. Thought that was a given.
-
• #3211
I think this has a lot to do with o2. I've used my sisters iPad back in Sweden and on 3G it was flying, felt as quick as the utter shit broadband we get from Birgin

bit of a random question.
I've lusted after an ipad for a few months now and my GF has kindly offered to get me one for my birthday, but the only thing is now I've been told I can have it I'm not sure if it's really what I want to spend that much money on.
it'd be a basic 16gb ipad 2 wi-fi model.
I'm just curious what people use their ipads for and what their killer apps are to see if I can find a few bonafide uses that will seal the deal and make me a bit more sure about getting one.

I have a 16gb ipad 2 wi-fi model. If I can wrestle it away from my girlfriend who loves it then I use it mostly for casual web browsing. Sat in front of the telly looking through the forum.. It is excellent to use an extra telly in the kitchen too using "tvcatchup" to stream live tv. If you have Sky you can use Sky go as well as all the usual catch up services like 4od. Snapseed is a good app for photo editing which works well on the iPad.
To be honest I wasn't sure what I would use the iPad for before I got it but now me and my girlfriend don't really use a laptop, just the iPad.

I had one for a while through work. I think they're great but I still find it hard to find a place for it to fit. I've got the macbook, PC if I need to do anything properly and It's much faster.
If I'm sofa browsing I'll use my phone most of the time, It's got a big screen though so that helps.

I'd def go for a 4g one, seems like a waste not to make it properly mobile
Navigating on it with gmaps is amazingly good
-
• #3216
I disagree ^ ;P
If money is a factor then don't worry about 3rd gen / 4g.
I wrestled with my conscience because I'll be employed soon, but could use some birthday money to get one.
A compromise was getting 2nd gen 16gb which is more 'affordable'. Having said that I've bought an extra 16gb wi drive and I got the one with sim card options for just in case.
Once you get one you'll find you're using it all the time, the apps are fun and it's convenient. Non of it is necessary though.
What else do you want for your b'day? -

Anyone got expert knowledge of InCopy?
There appears to be some 'locked content' in my catalogue that's not allowing me to anchor graphics any more, that's come from no where.
I've unlinked the Stories and deleted them but nada.Le sigh. I really don't want to start again...

I don't use my PC since getting my iPad. I resisted for ages, but finally bit the bullet when the new one came out.

Probably dumb itunes questions if you don't mind?
The wife has a new iphone and rather than set it up as another device on my account i want her to use her own itunes account so she can have her own apps and spotify account etc. Is it possible to have two accounts set up on the same machine looking at the same itunes music library? And if so where are the settings to adjust this?
-
• #3220
I think if you made two user accounts on the pc and kept the music folder with the tracks in outside of the itunes library folder (untick the add to itunes folder setting in preferences on both accounts) and in a folder on the drive that both accounts can access (C:\music or something). then it should be possible for you both to add that folder to your itunes library independantly.
not sure how well it'd cope with adding new tracks to the folder and having both accounts pick them up though.
this would mean you both have your own install of itunes and can link your phones to your own itunes library keeping all the other settings like apps etc separate.
-
• #3221
Yup, you'd have to have two logins on your mac / pc (ie two separate user profiles).
You can both share the same music library by doing this but can just have different apps etc.

• #3222
Awesome. Will try that when I set it up for her tonight. Thankee!
