can anyone tell me what the minimum rim depth is to get that awesome carbon wheel sound that you hear when a ridiculously expensive tt machine or pro rider rolls past? is it the resonation of the sound of the road through the hollow carbon rim that does it or something else. either way it sounds amazing!

wom is a combination of many factors, including rim depth, profile and construction. Zipps sound like a cruise missile even at low speeds, I think this is because they are nicely hollow but have no idea really. It might even be the dimples #marketingbollocks. At 30mph+ they sound phenomenal.

I didn't pay much Sparky - just depends how out of true the wheel is.
how come your wheels gone out of true already though? You haven't had the bike that long have you and It's only out on weekends isn't it?
I don't know if it is out of true. If it is then it's very, very slight as I spun the wheel and took a look earlier and saw nothing. They're CXP 33s on Hope Pro 2s so not exactly lightweight. But they were second hand. If I can see a slight wobble I'll take it to a shop in Norwich tomorrow.

thanks mate, is that all zipps or 404s and up?

They sound even better at 50mph.

I've only ridden 808s I'm afraid. The sound is miles better than my old hed 60s, and not as wommy as my trispoke, more of a constant awesome rumblewhoosh.

You should write their marketing campaigns.

808's? blimey they are 1k each. the pursuit of wom is expensive! any experience with those planet x ones or maybe even those dura ace c35s anyone??

I have the rs80 c50s, which are the clincher ones with ultegra hubs instead of DA. not so much wom but there's a definite note to them. can't comment on the planet x tubs I'm afraid, but there are others who can. chinese carbon may be your answer, dammit's getting an order together in the orient express thread.

the planet x clinchers make a pretty loud whirr, probably because it's all just a carbon fairing over an alu rim. Not tried their tubular ones yet. I've found Ultremo tyres make a bit of a whir by themselves, so combined with some deep carbon wheels it's great.

OK, so I need to check all spokes and have a really close look for a buckle. If it needs work, what should I expect to pay an LBS for a true?
If it's just a loose spoke and you're around east london I'll happily lend you a spoke key or sort it for you. have got red green and black park tools so one should fit.

just read later post re Norwich.... bit of a stretch :)

Cosmic Carbones make a pretty good fist of that hollow "shooooooooooooo" noise.
IME CXP33s and even the brick-profile RS80 C24s make a little bit of that noise, but you can't really hear it above the wind once you get to 20mph+.

I rode my road bike in today and noticed a rhythmic brushing noise from the front brake, only when using it. It makes a tttthhhhhttt noise, not a clunk, exactly once every wheel rotation. I checked the rim and tire and there's no scratch, seam, etc. Doesn't seem to be anything stuck in the pad - and anyway, it occurs on a wheel rotation, so I'd have thought it was rim/tyre. Any ideas?
Have you checked that the brake is accurately centred to the rim, so that both pads touch at the same time? If one side is contacting first, or with more pressure, it could exacerbate any imbalance in the wheel.

Thanks chap. I actually live in London, just heading to Norfolk for the weekend. I have a spoke key, but this is my best bike so would rather someone else got it exactly right. I'll have a look and see what I can see.

Brake is centered, with barely 2mm space on each side. This is essentially a brand new bike which was built up last summer and has seen less than 200 miles. It's this one: http://www.donhoubicycles.com/sparkys-2/

I say ride it a bit first. The pads/rim probably just need a little wearing in.

Just worried about wearing something out. I was lazy on my tourer with a scratchy brake noise and happily put a few hundred miles on it before bothering to sort it - by which point I'd scratched the rim to irreparable buggery.

check the pads are lined up properly with the rim, check the pads and rim for grit/embedded things. If they judder or squeak, toe them in a bit. Otherwise just ride it.

OK, will do. Cheers all. I'll stop worrying.

How long has there been a cyclesurgery on waterloo bridge?! Just discovered the thing, massively convenient.

I want to send a rim to France. The post office has just said to send a rim will have to be couriered which will be an obscene amount.
Any suggestion for how to send it?

Hi Lynx, if you’re still interested the Nitto Dynamics go up to 120mm
The NOS 3TT to 140mm.If it’s the quill bit you need longer, the silver Kalloy KL NOS seem to have a longer quill than most. Hope it’s helpful.

^^ I see loads of people riding round Regents Park with 50mm and they seem to manage.
That said a few people have said they've suffered terribly from the air pressure riding from Old St down Clarkenwelll Rd.
