  • Monday's weather looks a lot better, so if the depression moves a little faster we could find that the worst of the weather moves through over saturday night and conditions improve throughout Sunday.

I misunderstood upstart--somehow from this I thought he was suggesting doing it on Monday.

  • probably out... really dont see myself waking up in 2 1/2 hours

  • Got up, had a look, will leave you 'hard men' to it, off to Brighton about 10ish......with a tail wind .....yippeeeeeeeee.train back after chips in the arches.......

  • Yeah, I just had a look at that wind and thought "bollocks to it" :( seems a bit much for 120 miles fixed, tbh.

  • It's pretty wet out there, but not much in the way of actual rain (in Morden at least!)

  • Tres windy though

This. Too grim for me I think.

  • I'm out too i'm afraid, I can't face leaving warm snuggly bed to go out in that grimness, chapeau to those committed enough to see it through, good luck.

  • The latest forecast show the wind easing and then veering south-easterly. Not sure how soon or by how much though.

I'm going to head off to Clerkenwell I abut 10 mins. Guess I may be riding back home again but will check the thread when I get there

Heading in from oop North now...

  • I'm out guys.. Have a great ride, sorry for blowing out

  • I'm late, what way are you heading north? Essex road?

  • Cedywedy
They must have missed you and are up past elfield now.
Edit - sorry if this message came across a bit rude, cold hands and wet telephone don't make for great prose.

  • Shame that didn't work out, it's a really nice idea for a ride. Hope you get there safe and sound!

Agreed, it's worth running again if another mill related excuse can be found.

    Alright, that's probably a good thing :/

  • Apologies Cedywedy, there was only upstart and myself at the Mill @ 8am and we set off (up Essex Road!) at 8:10 as we were getting soaked already. I tried to refresh the thread for posts before we left but my Blackberry was ingesting water and wouldn't display properly! We picked up the Enfield splinter group (Woah Cats) and only found out about your post at that point unfortunately...

The reason I'm posting now is that the 3 of us opted to can the ride @ Royston (41m) sadly. It was pretty obvious that the weather wasn't getting any better and that headwind was absolutely battering us. As feared, there was nowhere open @ 11am in Royston to get a coffee and, after stopping for a few mins, we were so cold we could barely operate the ticket machines at the station for shivering fingers!

    Unfinished business...

  • Good effort gents. All things considered.

  • A brave attempt, guys. Let's by all means run the ride again when the weather is rideable!

Keep us updated on how the mill is doing in all this wind, upstart!

  • Yeah, great stuff for even trying and making it as far as you did. Respect and rep.

  • Hi chaps

Firstly - the sails on the Mill are now turning! It was fired up about 20 mins ago.

Rod Munch has posted a decent summary - we also saw plenty of localised flooding which was initially fun to ride through super fast but was a bit silly with hindsight.

Still, got 60 miles of riding I wouldn't have done otherwise so it's not all bad. Big thanks to Rod Munch and Woah Cats for being daft enough to attempt it too.

I'd be very keen to have another go (maybe when this drought is over?). I've ridden the Roydon section twice now which is the least scenic, hilliest and most permanently headwinded section - very keen to actually do the last bit. Will have a look at some dates and look at getting a v2 of the ride up again at some point.

  • And apologies we missed you Cedywedy - I wasn't awfully on the ball at the point because I was amazed anybody else was out there. We nearly sailed straight past Woah Cats too!

  • Respect for those who gave it a go. The wind this morning just put the frightners on me. If nothing else I can see the train service going wrong in the near future!

I was really looking forward to this one too! Next time...

Perfect weather for it, it must be said.

Call it 120 miles as headwind counts double. Top work to the three of you for braving the elements.

  • shame. i was looking forward to this a lot. but flooding and gale force headwinds doesn't even sound safe. hope i can make Windy Millers II.
