  • question is are they meant for tub AND clincher? Is that possible?

It is possible; back in the 1980s there was the Super-Champion Mixte rim which took tubulars or clinchers

  • Tester, what were the chains you were recommending a few weeks ago? Wippermam, KMC?

Looking for durable and cheap for the GF's tourer.

  • Right, I need a compact cranks, a very compact cranks.

the standard is 50/34, but I like to be able to have a 30t inner that are readily available, especially with a 48t big ring.

A lots of the compact cranks I see doesn't look it can go lower than 34t in the inside.

Why not Stronglight 80/99/100 or one of the SR clones? Should be plenty available in parts bins/cycle jumbles/ebay etc. Rings down to 28t.

Although as everybody else has already said, your life would be easier if you just accepted that 110mm PCD/34t is the new standard and you need to either HTFU or get an MTB cassette and RD

  • Tester, what were the chains you were recommending a few weeks ago? Wippermam, KMC?

Yeah, either of those. I prefer Wippermann, but millions of satisfied KMC customers can't be wrong.

'Cause this isn't some old flexy steel bike I'm going to put it on, currently it have a Sora 50/34 at the moment.

    Would be great if there's a 14-32t 10spd cassette.

  • Would be great if there's a 14-32t 10spd cassette.

So make one. All you need is the spare parts lists for Ultegra and LX MTB cassettes and a bit of imagination.

    Ultegra:
14t top sprocket (built-in spacer type)
    15/16/17 loose sprockets and spacers

    LX:
    Y1YR98040 Sprocket Unit (18-20-22T)
    Y1YR98070 Sprocket Unit (25-28-32T)

  • excellent, will try and order the necessity part for it, was already searching for the part till you provided the references number.

    thanks.

  • 96.4-28.7 gear inches, bit of an improvement on my current one on the roadie (88.7-28.9).

  • What good things are going on in London this week? Especially outdoorsy stuff with all the sun?

  • I know that when calculating functional threshold power, they say you can just go flat out for 20 mins and it works out that 95% of that average power will be your 60 min/FTP.

Is there a calculation for other durations? My regular training route takes 90 minutes and I can't be bothered/know of a convenient route to do a 20/60 minute effort so I'm looking for a conversion factor for either my 90 minute power figure or the max 60 minute section of that 90 minute ride.

  • In line adjusters for front mechs. Overkill? Unnecessary?

I used the Jagwire ones with iLinks, as standard adjusters just rotate uselessly.

I have a set of these still in the box. You can have them for postage cost if you like.

Still might not be worth it though.

  • Willl this work with 2001/2002 Record 9 speed shifters (and suitable mech)?

Wiggle | Campagnolo Veloce UltraDrive 9 Speed Cassette Cassettes & Freewheels

  • Anyone know where to get a 46t Sugino Messenger ring?

    Can only find cranksets.

Bonus second question - are VeloSolo rings any good?

  • Looking to rent a room in London, any websites people recommend?

Both Outlet, Spareroom and Gumtree have all worked very well for me in the past.

Be careful of scams though (on all of them).

  • Thanks, I am looking at a maximum budget of £400 per month (inclusive of bills). Does this seem reasonable?

How close to central could this get me?

With a healthy dose of good fortune, you'd be looking at sharing in Zone 2.

Don't expect luxury though, think more Peabody era with a shared kitchen/bathroom/living room.

  • Zone 6 more like.

  • Is it worth buying a campag branded cassette?

  • oh rly?

  • So which Campag compatible 9 speed cassette?

  • buy what then?

  • Just got back from a great mountain biking trip to Afan. My Reba forks held up really nicely, so thanks to everyone on here for the advice about those. I think that some of those descents would have been really unwise on the old Dart bouncers.

Most of the other stuff held up pretty decently on the trip, considering that the bike has some pretty entry-level parts. The front hub is pretty much toast though, really grindy. Also the rim has a little kink. As they're no-name, heavy OEM parts I'm thinking about a new wheelset. Was looking at Hope Hoops. What do people think? Is it worth choosing a stronger rear rim as I have a hardtail? What rims are a good bet for a ~85kg rider? Are there any better options for wheels? Will they still make that lovely angry-wasp noise?

Messenger cranks use the most common chainring size. 130mm bcd. type 130 chainring into ebay. They will all work.

Thanks man, was hoping I could replace with the same style but looks unlikely!

  • Mavic 717's

I was looking at those. Front and rear you think? No point opting for a slightly stronger rear/lighter & weaker front?

  • No.
